USC adopts clear bag policy

The University of South Carolina announced a new clear bag policy for ticketed athletic events, The State reports. Under the new policy, students will be limited in the types of bags, based on size and transparency, that they carry into certain sports venues. The policy will take effect in the fall semester and apply to all sports except for golf, swimming and diving, tennis, cross country, track and field, beach volleyball and equestrian. The move is intended to improve safety as well as make the entrance process faster.

SLED investigating incident on Sanford estate

Former South Carolina governor and current U.S. Representative Mark Sanford is at the center of a SLED investigation, WIS reports. Officials are looking into an incident at the family's estate that left Sanford's niece with an injured foot and reportedly involved the politician. His brother John Sanford issued a statement defending the former governor against any allegations of wrongdoing. SLED took over the investigation because of political connections between the family and the local Republican party.

Benjamin attends Dallas memorial

Columbia Mayor Steve Benjamin traveled to Texas on Tuesday to attend an interfaith memorial service for the five officers shot last week, The State reports. Benjamin is part of a delegation from the U.S. Conference of Mayors, where he serves as second vice president. President Barack Obama and former President George W. Bush, a Texas native, spoke at the service.
