USC looking to expand Honors College dorms

<p></p>

USC is planning to add a $15 million expansion to the Honors College dorms, according to a report by The State.

The expansion, which has not yet been approved by the Board of Trustees, would include an entire new wing that would include more residential rooms, offices and classrooms. Honors College officials say the new space would help with recruiting students and provide new offices for administrators.

A third wing was included in the original plans for the Honors College dorms, but it was cut for budgetary reasons. The university has already designated $5 million of an $8.5 million allotment from state legislators for capital projects for the expansion. Because housing is an "auxiliary expense" under state law, the other $10 million must come from the school's housing and institutional fund rather than tuition money or state appropriations.

USC spokesperson Wes Hickman told The State the project would tentatively start by the 2018-19 school year.
