South Carolina's No. 39 women’s tennis team beat the No. 41 Missouri Tigers at the Carolina Tennis Center in Columbia, SC on Sunday.

South Carolina was ranked 11 in the SEC with a record of (6-9, 3-5) coming into the match, and Missouri was ranked 13 in the SEC with a record of (13-9, 1-6).

The Gamecocks started the match strong by winning both the number one and the number three doubles matches to earn the doubles point.

At one, doubles Gamecocks senior Megan Davies and graduate student Mia Horvit beat the Tigers with a score of (6-4).

At two, South Carolina's sophomore Emma Shelton graduate student Silvia Chinellato lost to senior Gabrielle Goldin and freshman Valentina Vazquez Pongruber (2-6).

At three, doubles Gamecocks sophomore Ana Cruz and freshman Allie Gretkowski defeated Missouri with a score of (6-3).

Once singles play began, the Gamecocks started out strong, holding a lead in four of the six singles matches. Then, the team pulled out three of the remaining matches and lost one of the singles matches which left two of the singles matches unfinished.

Starting out with the number one singles play, Horvit beat Murgett from Missouri with a score of (6-2, 6-3). Then, at the second singles spot, Davies from South Carolina ran away with the match against Pongruber (6-0, 6-1).

At three singles, Gamecock Chinellato lost to Wright (6-2, 6-1), with that being the only loss that the Gamecocks had in the match.

Shelton sealed the match for the Gamecocks at the four singles spot against Oliveria (6-1, 6-3).

Since South Carolina reached the 4-match win mark early, two of the singles matches didn't get finished.

The last match at the six spot was in the favor of the Gamecocks with Cruz winning the first set with a score of (6-2, 3-5).

"It was good that we had a few people step up," head coach Kevin Epley said about his team's victory this Sunday. "The freshmen are growing up a little bit."

The Gamecocks Women’s tennis team will play at Mississippi State on Thursday, March 25.
