With graduation around the corner, many of us are staring at the future head on. For this farewell column I am expected to give some kind of “congratulations, the world is yours” pep talk. I am not supposed to tell you that the world is in fact not yours for the taking, despite the fact we so clearly feel entitled to it.

We’ve all been hearing of the Flint water crisis for years now, but like many things in the media, after awhile it has been swept to the side. But not for the residents of Flint, Michigan. After 1,000 plus days, these American citizens still don’t have the simple necessity of clean water. Yet, just last week, the governor of Michigan Rick Snyder said he will no longer provide free bottled water to the citizens of Flint, as he believes the water is well within regulations.

With Memorial Day just around the corner, attention has turned once again to Trump’s planned Veterans Day parade. For those of you who don’t know, Trump has his sights set on a lavish parade set on Nov. 11, 2018. The idea came to Trump after witnessing the French Bastille Day parade. As Trump puts it, "It was one of the greatest parades I've ever seen. We're going to have to try and top it."

We are demanding impossibly high expectations in regard to our students, financially and physically. Professors' workload requirements and tuition and fee demands show a gross negligence towards today’s economy. You simply cannot expect students to be able to afford the money it requires to get into college and the time it requires to stay in, and certainly not both at the same time.

I have been a student at this incredible university for three long years, and in those three years, I have changed so much as a person. Sadly, that is not the case for everyone who has walked across this campus.
