In my journey into the world of food production and waste, I stumbled upon a way I categorize my food that I never gave much thought to before. It’s something that most of us think about without realizing the consequences it has on the food system and the environment as a whole. That is the "perfectness" of a fruit or vegetable.

As a kid I wondered if limes were just ripe lemons. As an adult, I wonder why Mexican drug cartels were able to extort lime producers to the point that prices skyrocketed and supply shortages occurred.

There are good game days and there are bad game days. A lot of what makes a game day good has little to do with Williams-Brice. Good friends, good times and a great tailgate can do wonders to any Saturday afternoon. The Gamecocks playing well (and winning) helps, but are the people around you too drunk or too angry? All of these things are critical to enjoying the weekend. However, whether you’re drunk or sober, there is one thing that everyone at some point finds difficult on Saturdays: standing in the student section.

Why don’t we just let Donald Trump build his wall? I know that it is an unpopular idea to a lot of people. The wall that Trump envisions, which more than likely won’t become a reality, would be a physical symbol of our attitude towards immigration and our neighbors to the south. It would show our isolationism, our unwillingness to accept immigrants or otherness. Also, like other great walls before it, it would not succeed in its intended purpose. Many of the illegal immigrants in America today are people who overstayed their visas and arrived predominantly by plane. Unless this wall reaches up to the stratosphere, I don’t think it's stopping them.

I am one week into my international business master's degree and one thing has become abundantly clear in the past couple days — Trump and his doctrine of "America First" are not going away anytime soon.

The beginning of the fall semester is fast approaching, and I am returning to this school for the second time as a freshman.

While I’ve been on summer vacation, I have spent a lot of time reading books.

Depending on where you fall on the political spectrum, you may place more importance on some amendments than others. The Second Amendment, the right to bear arms, has held a prominent position in political discourse. Conservative thinkers tend to want to expand gun ownership, while those who are liberal want to limit gun ownership. Recently, those stances have been mirrored in regards to the First Amendment.

Every year high school juniors and seniors across America make a decision about their future. After graduating they have the option to join the workforce immediately — a choice that many people make, frequently for economic reasons. Other graduates decide to take the next step in education and go to college. We decided that by going to college, and spending money most of us don’t have, that we would be rewarded by higher-paying jobs and a more fulfilling career. It’s a dream that all of us are working towards as we accumulate debt.

I have written many times about food and produce the past two semesters. So much so that it may seem like I am obsessed about the topic, and maybe I am. But the only reason that I write so much about food is to bring attention to topics we may not think about because it is easy to overlook them. Food is vital to life and what happens with it, and around it, have deep and lasting effects on more than just your diet.

Millennials are a generation that fascinates the business community. Numerous articles have been written about cord-cutting, ride-sharing and the sharing culture in general that seems to be "so hip these days." Some of these articles even offer explanations as to why we do such activities. The short answer is that we consume media in a different way.

Whenever I hear family debates about immigration, they tend to focus on national security and political issues. These debates are missing a key factor in the actual impact of immigration reform that is rarely mentioned. I am speaking, of course, about agriculture. Farmers rely on immigrants, and that includes illegal immigrants, as labor for harvesting crops. Seventy one percent of farm workers are immigrants and almost half are working in the United States illegally.

One handwritten letter has set into motion world-changing events that have been months in the making. The United Kingdom has invoked article 50, an exit strategy for countries to leave the European Union. Now, the country will have two years to negotiate trade deals with the continent. The same populist movement that gave rise to Brexit resulted in Americans electing Donald Trump to the presidency. However, the result of that election may only be an example of the apple falling close to the tree.

Imagine you work at a physically demanding job where your boss tells you the following: you won’t be paid, you will make time outside of work for classes most people spend full time doing, those classes will be paid for, but you are to accept all the risk for any injury that you may receive which could result in you losing that support, doing work that gives your organization millions of dollars worth of benefit that you receive no part of, and that you should grin and be thankful that you get some education. Because even though your boss makes a seven figure salary, that doesn’t mean you’re doing any real work.

This semester, I have researched many fruits and vegetables to discover what I can about the healthy foods that I am eating. It surprised me that many come with stories of horror and tragedy. Many exotic fruits — think bananas and pineapples — are positively infamous for past brutalities. It’s scary when you start to see just how deep the rabbit hole goes. I planned on writing an article on United Fruit Company this week and quickly realized that it would take more than 500 words just to summarize the company’s history, much less discuss the implications of that history.

Beware, everyone, the stage is being set for another financial crisis. Last Friday, President Donald Trump began a quest to disassemble the Dodd-Frank Act, a bill created by Barack Obama in the wake of the 2008 financial crisis that placed stricter regulations on the financial sector. He plans to “do a big number on Dodd-Frank” while at the same time attempting to reverse the fiduciary rule which demands that retirement advisers with the title "fiduciary" act in the best interest of who they work for, instead of trying to line their own pockets with the most profit possible. These mandates would foster short-term growth in the financial sector and perhaps in the economy overall, but would set up a potential catastrophe down the line.

A news story that might have gone under the radar for most people during the run up to the presidential election was the hacking of Yahoo that stole the data of 500 million accounts. At this point you probably feel desensitized to the idea of information hacks, but in Yahoo’s case there are different reasons for concern. Announced publicly in September of last year, the hacking actually occurred two years prior in 2014.

Like many college students, my dietary practices would at best be considered questionable. Instant mac & cheese, Chik-fil-A chicken nuggets and frozen pizzas are not luxuries but staples of my one-man nutritional wrecking crew. My more health-conscious friends have tried to direct me to the fresh and organic lifestyle numerous times without success. A favorite healthy food mentioned when attempting to convert me is kale. The "Californian lettuce" has practically assumed state vegetable status and has become synonymous with hipster vegetarian culture. Knowing nothing about this magical vegetable, I decided to look up kale to see what all the fuss was about. Turns out, the ultra-nutritious vegetable isn’t as healthy as you might believe.

In an address on Tuesday, Prime Minister Theresa May announced that the United Kingdom will not enter the single European market — confirming the belief that the U.K. plans for a "hard Brexit" from the European Union. Though she mentions an intent to create a free trade deal with the E.U., this is a large step toward a more protectionist U.K. and it is a move that can galvanize other protectionist supporters in the world, including President Donald Trump. According to his own website, Trump plans for the U.S. to exit the Trans-Pacific Partnership and renegotiate the North American Free Trade Agreement. If these changes go through, the job market for college graduates will look very different from how it does now.

After the events of the campaign and the result of the presidential election, it would be easy to place all of our scrutiny on Donald Trump. His opinions have been controversial, and his appointments for government positions have been the subject of endless news coverage. While it is important for us to hold our executive branch to the highest standard, it is equally important to keep an eye on every level of government. As an electorate, we have to exercise our power and influence to make certain that our representatives act in our best interests.
