The South Carolina women's basketball team got out to a slow start in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, but eventually returned to their usual form, pulling away from Jacksonville in the second half to come away with a 77-41 victory. The size of the Gamecocks' post players proved to be too much for the Dolphins to handle, as sophomore forward A'ja Wilson and junior center Alaina Coates combined for 37 points and 21 rebounds.

Let me backtrack before the headline scares you away: My bracket sucks too. And when the sports editors publish our bracket in the Weekender tomorrow, it will undoubtedly suck as well. Such is the madness of March, as your odds of picking all 63 (or 67 if you pick the First Four games) games correctly are practically non-existent, and you aren't likely to come very close either.

I have a bone to pick with the NCAA selection committee. Not just because South Carolina was not included in the field. Not just because a 19-13 Syracuse team was given a 10-seed despite having the worst RPI of any at-large team in tournament history. Not just because Tulsa, who none of the experts had anywhere near the bracket, was given a bid. No, I am upset with the committee for the entire combination of poor choices they made in determining at-large bid recipients, as teams who are capable of making runs in the tournament find themselves on the outside looking in, while teams in the field will likely get blown out in their first game.

Without leading scorer and rebounder Michael Carrera, the South Carolina men’s basketball team expected a dogfight in Friday’s quarterfinal matchup with Georgia, who had beaten the Gamecocks twice in the regular season. Despite leading by as much as 11 and holding an advantage for over 35 minutes of game time, Carrera’s absence would prove to be too much to bear, as the Gamecocks fell 65-64 to abruptly end their stay in the SEC Tournament in Nashville.

The South Carolina women's basketball team accomplished the first of many postseason goals Sunday, defeating the Mississippi State Bulldogs 66-52 to claim their second consecutive SEC Tournament title. It was the Gamecocks' balanced offense that led the way yet again, with three players scoring in double figures. Sophomore forward A'ja Wilson and senior guard Tiffany Mitchell, who was named SEC Tournament MVP, led with 19 points each. Senior guard Khadijah Sessions added 11 points, while sophomore guard Bianca Cuevas added a valuable seven off the bench.

The first two times the South Carolina women's basketball team took on the Kentucky Wildcats this season, they had to battle it out for 40 minutes to pull out victories. That wasn't the case Saturday, as Kentucky led for just 21 seconds while the Gamecocks cruised to a 93-63 win.

Early last week, four South Carolina football players headed to Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis for the NFL Combine, attempting to boost their draft stock through medical evaluations, interviews, meetings with teams and on-field workouts. Running back Brandon Wilds and tight end Jerell Adams took advantage of that opportunity, while minor injuries to wide receiver Pharoh Cooper and offensive tackle Brandon Shell cost them the chance to do the same.

South Carolina running back Brandon Wilds didn't wow any scouts with his on-field workouts at the NFL Combine on Friday, but he didn't disappoint either. Just as he did during his four years in Columbia, the Blythewood native displayed incredible consistency, further proving his reliability to professional scouts.

Ole Miss defensive tackle Robert Nkemdiche has unquestionable talent, which is why he was rated as the top player in his class coming out of high school and is projected to be selected in the first round of the 2016 NFL Draft. However, at his NFL Combine interview Friday, Nkemdiche didn't find himself talking about football hardly at all.

Despite just 28 catches in 2015, South Carolina tight end Jerell Adams is making his way up teams' draft boards, largely due to a strong week at the Senior Bowl. Heading into the his on-field workouts at the NFL Combine on Saturday, Adams is ranked as the sixth best tight end in the draft class, but with another strong performance, he could continue to creep up the list.

South Carolina wide receiver Pharoh Cooper came into college wanting to play defensive back for Coach Steve Spurrier, before switching to offense during preseason practice of his freshman year. Now at the NFL Combine, Cooper views his variety of roles in the Gamecock offense as a strength, giving him an advantage as he heads towards playing on Sundays.

With Sunday's home matchup with LSU approaching, the South Carolina women's basketball team finds itself in the same position as last season: one win away from a perfect 16-0 against SEC opponents. The Gamecocks are hoping to find more success than they did in last year's regular season finale, when they traveled to Kentucky, and the Wildcats handed the visitors their only loss in league play. That loss forced the Gamecocks into a tie with Tennessee atop the conference standings, making the two teams co-champions.

When the next group of NFL hopeful wide receivers takes the field Saturday attempting to impress scouts with a speedy 40-yard dash time, South Carolina's Pharoh Cooper will not be among them. Cooper will participate in other drills, but due to a quad injury, he is likely pulling out to avoid disappointing scouts with a slow time.

With the 2016 NFL Scouting Combine comes the chance for many players to make an impact on NFL scouts and coaches in hopes of boosting their draft stock and potential rookie paycheck. South Carolina will have four players in Indianapolis this weekend in wide receiver Pharoh Cooper, tight end Jerell Adams, running back Brandon Wilds and offensive lineman Brandon Shell.

Heading into the final week of regular season play, the South Carolina women’s basketball team is 13-0 in conference play, having already defeated all of the SEC’s top teams, three of which were in the top ten at the time. With Thursday’s win over Georgia, the Gamecocks clinched the outright regular season title in the SEC, but with their final three games coming against the three worst teams in the conference, coach Dawn Staley’s team is expected to achieve perfection.

Coming off an 89-62 loss to Kentucky on Saturday, their worst of the season, the South Carolina men’s basketball team’s slide continued, as they lost on the road to lowly Missouri by a score of 72-67. The Gamecocks have struggled on the road all season, as four of their five losses have come away from Colonial Life Arena, all of which were unexpected.

In 2005, the NBA changed the rules regarding when players could declare for the draft, requiring players to be 19 years of age before being able to pursue a professional basketball career. This system has created a pattern of one-and-dones, where the nation’s best players essentially agree to a one-year deal before jumping ship for the money and fame of the NBA.
