I’ll never forget what caused me to lose my once-unwavering faith in the American media. It was immediately following the Trayvon Martin shooting, when news broke that MSNBC had deliberately altered tape recordings of George Zimmerman in order to make him sound as if he was targeting Trayvon for being black.

At this point in his career, Kanye West is no stranger to controversy. Despite widely being heralded as a hip-hop visionary and pioneer, his antics seem at times to attract more attention than his music. Whether it be his highly publicized beef with the likes of Taylor Swift and Amber Rose, or his comments about George W. Bush, there always seems to be some form of controversy surrounding Kanye. The latest in the hilariously long line of Kanye controversies is his outspoken support for President Trump, with the rapper taking to Twitter to declare his love of the polarizing president and enthusiastically show off his autographed MAGA hat.

There has been a lot of fear in recent years regarding the future of Western democracy. Alarmists point to both the recent surge of (democratically elected) far-right and nationalist parties in Europe as evidence that liberal democracy is in crises. In a sense, they’re correct. The ridiculous view in the late 20th century that liberal democracy had triumphed over all ideological enemies and that the history of political development was at an end has been thoroughly refuted. Young people are being increasingly drawn towards previously taboo ideologies on both the left and right, and dissatisfaction with the structure and values of our current system seems at times to be ubiquitous. But is turning away from democracy really the catastrophe that some people make it out to be?

Sex work has aptly been dubbed the “world’s oldest profession,” existing in some capacity since the beginning of recorded history. The practice of prostitution was ubiquitous in societies like Ancient Rome and Ancient Greece and allegedly even enjoyed a sacred status in some ancient cultures. Today, prostitution and sex work is almost universally seen as violent, degrading and shameful with popular morality condemning the practice as the pinnacle of sexual depravity and immorality. In recent years, the practice has become linked to the atrocity of human trafficking, with many victims of human trafficking being sold as slaves into prostitution.

No stranger to extreme and incendiary rhetoric, President Trump has recently floated the idea of killing drug dealers in the United States. The idea, obviously borrowed from the draconian policies of the controversial Philippine leader Rodrigo Duterte, is Trump’s proposal to end the national opioid epidemic that has led to tens of thousands of deaths from overdose.

The past several years have been brutal for entertainment industry award shows. The Oscars, the Grammys and the Emmys have all seen their ratings drop to abysmally low numbers, losing viewers by the millions and rapidly receding from relevance. The cause of this drastic decline in popularity is no doubt multifaceted and can’t be blamed on any single thing, but one factor that likely plays a large role is the increasingly political nature of these awards shows.

In the age of Trump, the Republican party and those associated with it are completely unrecognizable. John McCain has become a liberal hero, the bumbling George W. Bush is being presented as a source of sage wisdom and, most significantly, the objectivist Paul Ryan is pushing bills that will end up drastically increasing the size of the national debt.

Lamenting the deeply divided state of American politics in the 21st century is so commonplace that it has almost become cliche. The partisan divide on many issues is so deeply entrenched that real reform seems nearly impossible, with ideologues on both sides content with having the debates go around in endless circles and allowing Washington to fall into gridlock hell. While division on many issues is understandable, one topic that simply doesn’t deserve its highly politicized status is the environment.

In the wake of the Harvey Weinstein allegations, it seems that almost no figure in the entertainment industry is beyond suspicion. A depressingly large amount of men and women have come forward and shed light on the seedy reality of the entertainment business: Sexual abuse and harassment run rampant, and often the perpetrators of these crimes are able to carry out their abhorrent behavior without fear of repercussion.

Despite being used since ancient times across the globe, psychedelic drugs remain illegal and stigmatized in the United States. The DEA lists psychedelics as Schedule 1 drugs, meaning they are officially considered to have no more medicinal value than life-threatening substances like heroin. This flies in the face of the actual scientific evidence and medical literature, which has established that psychedelics such as LSD and psilocybin mushrooms have tremendous potential for treating crippling mental afflictions such as depression, anxiety and post traumatic stress disorder. Research into psychedelics was interrupted by the War on Drugs in 1970, but modern doctors have returned to the subject and found exciting medical possibilities that warrant further exploration.

A house divided cannot stand. In American politics today, there is an ever-increasing rift between conservative and liberal America that seems to grow more each year, with partisans on both sides more or less cloistering themselves in their own little bubbles free from all dissent. According to a new Pew Research study, the political and social divisions between the parties continues to grow at a rapid rate, with ideological conformity and close-mindedness becoming the new norms for members of both parties.
