After undergoing major restructuring over the past few months, Carolina Productions is on its way to bringing a boatload of new events, speakers and performers to USC this spring. From Nick Offerman, a “Parks and Recreation” actor, to Seth Meyers, the head writer for “Saturday Night Live,” the CP staff aren’t the only ones excited about the upcoming semester.

USC has consistently shown that it cares about Columbia. Volunteering makes a huge impact on both the beneficiary and the volunteer, so it’s crucial we have programs in place to fill this important need. We’re proud our university is guiding students to realize the importance of giving back to the community that has given us so much.

Nothing except our campus squirrels have been on top of the Thomas Cooper Library for 35 years. However, for the past week, we’ve all seen and been curious about the people running around on T-Coop’s roof. As it turns out, they haven’t just been there for the view. Rather, they have been fixing repairs to water damages that have existed for four years, damages that give us reason to be pretty concerned.

For the past few years, our university has been growing at turbo speed, and we’ve all been feeling the effects. Our rapidly rising tuition rates, crammed dorms and 40-minute long lunch lines at the Horseshoe Deli have been the trade-off for USC’s attempts to become a larger and more impressive institution.
At Tennessee Tech, she helped start Web degree programs, which combined online coursework along with physical campuses. In her new role as chancellor, Elkins will control the new online college — aimed at wooing South Carolinians back into the classroom and providing broader access to higher education — and the USC system’s four regional campuses. When the program officially begins in August, she expects to start off with an initial class of 500 to 1,000 students.

Next year, many USC students may be fighting for new housing. This time, however, the housing isn’t on campus. The Palmetto Center, a building that has been sitting vacant on Main Street, is set to be converted into private, off-campus housing, dubbed the “Hub on Main Street,” by August 2014.

The green community is a huge part of our university now, but it hasn’t always been that way. David Whiteman, the faculty principal of West (Green) Quad, is finally stepping down after working a fruitful six and a half years toward making USC a more sustainability-oriented school.
