The plans are ambitious. Not only is USC striving for LEED Platinum certification, they hope to achieve a Net Zero energy use rating as well, which means the building must generate as much energy as it consumes. Complete with light-maximizing architecture, open-air pavilions and gardens, natural heating and cooling structures and even rainwater collection systems, we might as well be studying in the rain forest.

Researchers from the Moore School have created a tool that will allow users to calculate the results that changes in tax laws can have on state tax revenue. It’s quick and effective, and a good example of all the good the university offers the state.

The flu peaked earlier than expected this year, a bad sign for those who were not quite prepared. With families, friends and classmates falling ill rapidly over the past month or so, people all over our state have been flooding to their nearest health center to shoot up with this year’s vaccine. The problem with that is, the state wasn’t quite prepared for the flu season either, and now our vaccine supplies are running dry.

The organization has recently started reconsidering its membership restrictions based on sexual orientation and nonreligious beliefs. This is a quick and dramatic change of heart for an organization that was committed to its policy of banning gay members along with other members who don’t narrowly fit its world view just seven months ago.

Four years later, USC is finally making progress on its efforts to update the antiquated VIP system. For a system that controls registration, classes, employment, tuition, parking, etc., the switch is, without a doubt, a difficult one to make.

For years now, the Thomson Student Health Center has been a huge pain in the backside of our school. For a massive student body, the cramped and dilapidated building stuck awkwardly behind the Russell House has been, rather than the healing sanctuary it was made to be, one of the most avoided places on campus.

In his 2013 State of the City address, Mayor Steve Benjamin had a lot of praise for the “famously hot” city of Columbia. Throughout his speech, he exalted the revitalization of downtown Main Street and rattled off several accomplishments the city has recently witnessed.
