Jadeveon Clowney, the top-ranked football recruit in the nation, will announce his college decision today at 10:15 at South Point High in Rock Hill. Clowney will choose between USC, Clemson and Alabama. He is expected to choose the Gamecocks. See tomorrow’s edition of The Daily Gamecock for full coverage.

But Georgia coach Mark Fox went there. So I can go ahead and acknowledge the rather simple and eloquent explanation of what the Bulldogs' 60-56 victory over South Carolina boiled down to.

The parody of parity that was the Southeastern Conference’s Eastern Division is no more. A beast of the East rose from what was once a crowd of mediocrity and confirmed itself Wednesday night.

Since losing to South Carolina at home 25 days ago, Florida coach Billy Donovan said he hasn't seen much of a difference in his team.

Signing Day has come and gone, and Jadeveon Clowney is still on the board.

With a nation-leading 32 commitments and two remaining targets still on the board, head coach Steve Spurrier and the Gamecocks should be able to close on another Top 25 class and fortify needy areas as they look to continue the program's march toward joining the conference elite.

Tomorrow is National Signing Day. Since arriving in Columbia, I’ve learned tomorrow is an unofficial holiday for the South. I understand the logic. No matter how shady it can be, recruiting is the lifeblood of any college football program, and those are no more beloved than in this part of the country. I’ll always think it is a bit silly to obsess over the college decision of 18-year-old boys, but as coach Steve Spurrier would say, it is what it is.

The last Auburn player to leave the floor Saturday was Rob Chubb. As he strolled out, a female Tiger fan hung over the railing above him.

In my column Monday, I called the Tigers "the SEC's version of the Washington Generals." That was probably an unfair comparison on my part because unlike the Generals, Auburn isn't trying to lose. But it's undeniable that the Tigers have made opponents look the Harlem Globetrotters this season. With the exception of an out-of-nowhere 65-60 upset of Florida State in early January, this has been a harrowing hoops season on the plains.

Do you think any presidential candidates would spend time in our republic's smaller states if they didn't have to worry about getting its electors? Of course they wouldn't. They'd instead campaign on some sort of major metropolis loop. They'd go to where the most cameras exist and the most people would see them.

The Gamecocks are young, inexperienced and prone to off nights along with brilliant nights. Saturday night against an equally-green Kentucky squad happened to be one of the former. The Carolina faithful in attendance hoped for more Big Blue domination and another opportunity for an ill-advised letter to be drawn up by student government officials. Instead, they saw their team learn a rough lesson in just how much further it has to go.

In college basketball, the upset of a No. 1 team rarely carries much significance. Top-ranked teams tend to be similar to Saddam Hussein statues in Iraq during the summer of 2003 — they all come crashing down at some point. It's already happened once this season. It occurred six times last season and eight the year before that.

The Garnet Army officially opened its third tour of duty Wednesday night, showing no signs of battle fatigue.

Prior to tipoff Wednesday, ISP — a sports marketing firm that works with South Carolina’s athletics department — put cardboard signs on almost every seat inside Colonial Life Arena.

But that also means the league is as wide open as ever. Through the first three league games, none of the conference's 12 teams are better than 2-1. The last time that happened? The 2003-2004 season, which coincidentally is the last time USC made it to the Big Dance.

The USC coaching staff won’t undergo any offseason personnel changes, but there will be shifts in responsibility.
(01/13/11 10:12am)
Prior to Wednesday night's game with Alabama, USC coach Darrin Horn was asked if his team had done anything to cut down on its turnovers, as it had done in an overtime win over then-No. 22 Vanderbilt four days prior.

Cam Newton and crew did me one better. Actually, they did me three and a crystal football better. But getting back to my point: I zeroed in on Auburn for three reasons: program momentum (AU had a ton of it after that wild and wacky Outback Bowl win), personnel (I didn't think he'd win the Heisman, but I thought Newton had the potential to be SEC Offensive Player of the Year) and, most importantly, its schedule.

Everyone knows about the pinball-style offense Oregon runs. Everyone knows about Darron Thomas and LaMichael James. Everyone knows about the wacky picture boards and the breakneck speed in which the ball gets snapped. Everyone knows how many defenses the Ducks have made look just plain silly.

The Chick-fil-A Bowl loss should be treated no differently, and not just by the USC players and coaches. It should be treated that way by USC fans as well.
