A public memorial service for Russ Meekins, the USC University Foundations executive director, will be held Tuesday at the USC Alumni Center. The 10 a.m. service will include special remarks from University President Pastides, as well as words from former Columbia mayor Bob Coble and other university officials.

As of 12:01 a.m. Saturday, the U.S. government is officially shut down. The good news — it won’t really affect you. As many as 800,000 government employees could be furloughed, or sent home without pay, but all necessary functions will continue. Traffic lights still work, the mail still goes out, comptrollers still direct planes into landings. If the shutdown drags into a week or longer, it could start to create delays in flights or passport processing. But for now, the most you might be missing are few creature comforts.

Andrew Zirkman sat in the packed Russell House Ballroom with his mom, who came down with him from New Jersey. It’s just his second visit to USC’s campus, but he’s transferring after just one semester at Virginia Tech. And he’s not alone — several hundred students are officially joining the ranks of the Gamecocks this semester after starting their degrees at other institutions.

Residence Hall Association President Turner Johnson has resigned his post, effective midnight Tuesday. In his resignation letter sent out about 4 p.m. that day, Johnson said that his resignation was due to a violation of the university's credit requirements for holding the position.

Impeachment charges against all but one member of the Residence Hall Association executive board, filed Nov. 19, will be debated once a senator proposes and reads them during senate. The charges, filed by Cliff Hall President Stephen Dilullo, aren't officially released. According to the organization's constitution, grounds for impeachment include not fulfilling the duties of office and breach of attendance requirements. None of the executive board members have missed more than three meetings, the maximum absences allowed, so the charges likely allege a constitutional violation.

Mike Couick earned two degrees from USC in English and law and now teaches public policy to doctoral students. But in addition to his personal ties to the university, Couick now holds influence over something near and dear to college students: money. More specifically, the hundreds of dollars students spend every year on electric bills.

Fliers saying "It's OK to be white," part of a national effort by online message boards, appeared on USC's campus as of Nov. 20. According to reports in The State and WIS, the fliers were first seen at Swearingen, 300 Main and the Coker Life Sciences building. USC student Vaidehi Gajjar tweeted a picture of one of the signs at 6:25 a.m. Monday, tagging University President Harris Pastides.

Just under 10 percent of the students at USC use counseling services in a year. Of those roughly 3,200 students, most choose to return for a second session.
