Shameful excesses haunt defense spending
Welcome to 2012. Hopefully, the world won't be ending this year, but the American Dream is under a dire threat. This is a year that could very well determine what the endgame of the American experience will be. Will we, as a nation, stop ourselves at the brink, reversing our seemingly inevitable downfall and truly embracing the ideals we established with the signing of the Constitution? Or, will we go the way of all the empires before us, looking back at our glorious past while greed and corruption rip us apart from the inside and reduce us to a chapter in a history book?
The Republican Party is putting on a real show with its slate of candidates. It reads like a “Who’s Who of People Who Should Not Run for Office.”
Lost in the havoc of the Penn State scandal is a similar problem in our own backyard. Louis ReVille, an assistant principal and coach at a Charleston-area prep school, was arrested last month for performing lewd acts on several minors, with the list of victims steadily growing as the investigation continues. As ReVille's past was scrutinized, an incident at The Citadel was uncovered. In 2002, he was a cadet and summer camp counselor; during a camp that year, he is alleged to have invited a 14-year-old boy back to his room to watch pornography and masturbate together. The incident was reported to Citadel administration in 2007, but — as at Penn State — the school failed to pass on the information to the police.
Herman Cain is accused of sexual assault by a growing list of women. He claims he is the victim of a “Democrat machine” and his campaign raises nearly as much money in one week as it had the past three months. Meanwhile, his own party begins to dig up as much dirt on his accusers as they can, spinning it to make the women look like greedy liars attacking an innocent man for political gain.
We’ve had three years of obstructionist Congressmen, an opposition party too political to allow actual work to happen and a majority party too frightened to push any issues. Washington’s focus is on an election instead of the real issue — a recession. Millions of Americans are suffering and the only thing that matters is winning.

They also will answer, 'Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you?' He will reply, 'I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least among you, you did not do for me.'" (Matthew 25:41-45)
Americans often refer to our system of government as a democracy, but this is false at the national level. The Founding Fathers crafted the presidential election process to protect from the influence of the common man, leaving the ultimate choice in the hands of an elite minority who could be trusted with the power. That tradition continues today. The power to decide who you get to vote for president is in the hands of party machines, corporations and media conglomerations. The recent Republican debates prove that much; Romney and Perry receive all the attention, while candidates with significant popular backing like Paul or Huntsman are largely marginalized.
It was chaos after that. People were fleeing down streets darkened by ash and dust. Firemen were running in to evacuate the towers. Everyone was scrambling to find out what was going on.
Health care reform became a neutered, compromised piece of junk that the Republicans still didn't vote for. Guantanamo Bay is still open. Tax breaks for the rich are still in place, the Patriot Act has been renewed, environmental protections remain broken and campaign finance has reached its most undemocratic point in history.
