Tim McGraw goes country contemporary

Tim McGraw has made a name for himself as one of the most successful country music artists in the industry. He's soared to the top of the charts over the past two decades, and his hits include more than just simple love songs.

Known for continuously revising how country music is supposed to sound, McGraw attempts to use this album as an outlet for his creativity.

“Damn Country Music” is McGraw’s 14th studio release and his latest production. The title itself seems to imply that this collection is more traditional than his others.

Though the album begins with a slight nod to folk music, the remaining songs move in a fresh and modern direction.

“Here Tonight” not only showcases McGraw’s artistry in a new light, but it also features his daughter Gracie for the first time on one of his tracks. Her vocals are stunning and give the album a more familiar vibe. Fans can really connect to McGraw with this particular song.

“Losin’ You” is another track that serves as both contemporary and country rock. It's a moody endeavor that leads eventually to “California," another country-gone-contemporary song that works seamlessly for McGraw. “California” is a pop masterpiece that will surely be heard on the radio in no time.

“Want You Back” is the only truly country song on the album. Among the other loud and catchy tracks, this song slightly fades away. It's a slow and steady ballad that features endearing guitar riffs behind McGraw’s classically raw vocals.

“Damn Country Music” blends together both old and new sounds — a technique that has proven to work beautifully for McGraw. It may not win any awards or cause a huge stir in the country music scene, but this album certainly deserves a heartfelt listen.
