Wingo honored by hometown of Mauldin

Second baseman given key to city, has high school jersey retired

Before he heads to Ogden, Utah, and begins his professional baseball career as a member of the Los Angeles Dodgers’ organization, College World Series Most Outstanding Player Scott Wingo was given a hero’s welcome home, and farewell, by his hometown of Mauldin over the weekend.

Wingo was given the key to the city by the mayor and had his Mauldin High School jersey retired, among other honors and awards during the day. The second baseman will now head west and start playing for the Ogden Raptors, the Dodgers’ Advanced Rookie League farm club.

Baseball to lose two: Freshmen DeSean Anderson and Greg Brodzinski will leave the USC baseball program and transfer.

Brodzinski, a catcher from Turnersville, N.J., is leaving in search of more playing time after having only 12 at-bats as a freshman.

Anderson appeared in 21 games this past season. His decision to leave is reportedly due to academics. The High Point, N.C., native was suspended earlier in the season due to grades, and multiple outlets have stated he failed to make the necessary marks to return in the fall. There are reports Anderson wishes to transfer to a junior college and attempt to reenroll at USC for his junior season.

On his Twitter page Monday night, Anderson posted, “Just sittin (sic) here thinkin about whats happened & how Ive lost somethin really close to me. Hopefully I can be apart of #Gamecock-Nation again.”

Golfers named to scholar team: Four members of the USC women’s golf team have been named to the National Golf Coaches Association All-American Scholar Team, the school announced Monday.

“I am so proud of these student-athletes, as they were very disciplined to be able to achieve both on the golf course and in the classroom,” said USC coach Kalen Anderson in a release. “Their success is also a testimony to the strong academic support that we have at the University of South Carolina.”

Katie Burnett, Katie Rose Higgins, Amanda Strang and Samantha Swinehart are USC’s reps among the 26 Southeastern Conference student-athletes named to the list. To earn the distinction, each honoree must have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.5.
