Kenny Miles named No. 2 tailback

Junior beats out Carson, Wilds

Kenny Miles has won the race to be the first halfback off the bench against East Carolina, head coach Steve Spurrier said Tuesday.

“He’s the backup,” Spurrier said. “If something were to happen to Marcus [Lattimore], he’s our guy.”

Miles led the Gamecocks in rushing as a redshirt freshman in 2009 before falling out of the lineup when Lattimore emerged last fall.

Miles did move to defense for a day last week, working at safety. Spurrier said the move will not stick, as Miles was briefly worked out on defense due to depth concerns before the coaching staff decided to drop the idea.

“He’s on offense,” Spurrier said. “That was just a one day [thing] to see if he could pick something up.”

True freshman Shon Carson will also get carries against the Pirates.

“He’ll be in the game some also,” Spurrier said. “We’ve got to kind of pick our spots to put Shon in there. Shon’s a really good running back. Hopefully all three of them will get in the game a bit.”
