USC prepares for potential Shaw absence against Florida

Thompson next in line if need arises

Fifteenth-ranked South Carolina will make a decision on its starting quarterback for the Florida game by Wednesday or Thursday, coach Steve Spurrier said Sunday.

Starter Connor Shaw, who suffered a concussion in the fourth quarter of USC’s 44-28 loss to now-No. 8 Arkansas on Saturday in Fayetteville, Ark., will be held out of practice to begin the week. He will then undergo testing from USC’s medical staff to see if he can play against the Gators.

If Shaw is not cleared, redshirt freshman Dylan Thompson, a Boiling Springs native, will make his first career start. Thompson will take first team snaps until Shaw returns, Spurrier said. In the event Shaw is not available, slotback Bruce Ellington may see an increase in time at quarterback in the Gamecocks’ wildcat package.

Safety DeVonte Holloman’s status is also up in the air, Spurrier said. Holloman also suffered a concussion against the Razorbacks and will be held out of practice until passing his baseline tests.
