Currently in the House of Representatives there is a debate on pay raises for school teachers.
Becoming a National Board-certified teacher is a form of higher education. People often correlate higher degrees with higher salaries. Since the National Board certification constitutes as advancement from a bachelor’s degree, these teachers should make more than teachers who lack the certification. This is the same idea that goes on in a university where professors with doctorates are expected to make more than professors without them.
Teacher raises for special certification are important to students who are en route to the educational field and to the overall educational system in the state of South Carolina. South Carolina’s educational system is lacking compared to other educational systems in the nation. One significant issue that many students are aware of is the “Corridor of Shame,” an extremely poor stretch of land and schools along Interstate 95. In order to eliminate the “Corridor of Shame,” South Carolina needs incentives like certification-based pay raises due in order to get more students interested in the educational field.
It is only fair that teachers who go beyond their bachelor’s degrees receive an increase in pay. This increase in pay will encourage more students to aspire to work in the educational field, which is needed in order to fix this state’s educational system and ultimately end the Corridor of Shame.
