Second suspect arrested in weekend Five Points brawl

Police have arrested a second suspect in last weekend’s brawl on Harden Street.

Benedict College officers arrested John Cornelius Sumner, 21, of Stockbridge, Ga., in connection with the incident in a Columbia apartment near the college’s campus, according to Columbia police spokeswoman Jennifer Timmons.

Sumner is charged with second-degree assault and battery, according to a release.

The Friday afternoon arrest came a day after police announced they’d arrested another suspect in the brawl, Stanley McBride, and issued warrants for two others, including Sumner and Michael Jermel Kendrix, of Austell, Ga.

Kendrix is also expected to be charged with second-degree assault and battery, according to the release.

More arrests are possible, though, Columbia Police Chief Randy Scott said. Scott's comments follow the incident, in which a man was allegedly kicked and punched in the head and chest by seven to 10 men early Sunday morning, according to an incident report.

He was taken to a hospital with a broken jaw, severe lacerations and a swollen face.
