Spurrier receives two-year contract extension

No pay raise included in new deal for Head Ball Coach

Head football coach Steve Spurrier will receive a two-year contract extension without a pay raise, which will keep him coaching the Gamecocks until 2017.

The board of trustees unanimously approved the extension Monday afternoon. President Harris Pastides and Athletics Director Ray Tanner both recommended the contract extension, citing what they both called the football program’s “unprecedented” success on and off the field.

“We’re delighted with the success we’ve been having, and Coach Spurrier is equally delighted in his stewardship of our fine football team,” Pastides said on a conference call with board members.

Spurrier will not receive any additional compensation in this contract extension. While Tanner did not rule out a pay raise in the future, he said that Spurrier was not interested in a raise when they discussed the extension.

Spurrier’s original contract would have expired on Dec. 31, 2015. The extension makes the new expiration date Dec. 31, 2017.

The Gamecocks reached 10 regular season wins this season and last, and reached 11 wins in the 2011-2012 season. The team was selected to play the Michigan Wolverines in the Outback Bowl Sunday evening.

After last week’s win against Clemson, the team’s fourth in a row, Spurrier became USC’s all-time winningest coach with 65 games won.
