In our opinion: Student safety improved with Walk Home Cocky

With the recent violence on and off campus, something as simple as walking home from the library can seem dangerous. But with Freshman Council’s and student senate’s Safety and Transportation Committee’s wonderful joint new initiative, there’s no need to worry.

Their new initiative, “Walk Home Cocky,” help makes sure students make it back safely to either their residence halls or to their parking garage. It’s based off the idea that there’s safety in numbers — at least two trained student volunteers with brightly colored shirts and walkie-talkies — and it’s an idea we wholeheartedly support.

Not only does it eliminate the daunting prospect of walking back to one’s dorm through campus alone, it has relatively low start-up costs, and from research Freshman Council has done independently, it’s something the majority of the student body supports.

Freshman Council isn’t sure when it can implement this new program — it still needs approval from the university and to coordinate a training session for potential volunteers — but we hope it’s implemented soon. If the initiative proves successful at the library, it may be expanded to other popular late-night places on campus such as the Strom Thurmond Wellness and Fitness Center.

And while it’s important to note that students can already call a police escort to take them wherever they need to go, we’re glad this new program provides students yet another option to ensure their safety.

After a late-night study session at the library for that big exam, the last thing anyone wants to worry about is getting home safely.
