Downing wings to ‘make a wish’ come true

Wing by wing, about 75 students raised nearly $9,000 Wednesday afternoon.

Chi Omega sorority’s “War of the Wings” saw 15 groups of five from USC fraternities and sororities eat some 3,000 wings to raise money for the Make-a-Wish Foundation, said Maggie Heckmann, a first-year social work student who helped coordinate the event.

The money will go to a 4-year-old girl, who kicked off the championship round, to fulfill her dream of going to Disney World.

Participants had 20 seconds to down five wings for each round of the competition they advanced to. Teams were split into two brackets — men and women — until the two top teams, Theta Tau fraternity and Delta Delta Delta sorority, faced off.

Theta Tau came out on top, but Heckmann said it wasn’t a shoo-in; USC’s sorority women held their own.

“The girls kept up,” she said.
