State fair to open on schedule

The recent effects of the exponential rainfall and subsequent flooding in South Carolina will not put a damper on the state fair. Officials from the state fair said Tuesday that they plan to start the event on time on Oct. 14.

This year marks the 146th South Carolina State Fair. The fair will run through Oct. 25 at the state fairgrounds across from Williams-Brice on George Rogers Boulevard and Rosewood Drive.

State fair manager Gary Goodman said in a press release that they are planning to start the state’s annual festival on time. Vendors, operators and other employees at the fair were asked to stall their arrival to Columbia in order for proper refurbishing and cleanup of the venue.

“We are on schedule to open next Wednesday at noon and that is our full intention,” Goodman said.

The fair will also donate the $5 public parking fees to help in the relief of those affected by the flooding. Advance tickets and ride vouchers will be on sale at Walgreens drug stores across the state and in areas near Charlotte and Augusta.

“We felt like this was something the community needed and provides a chance for everyone to contribute,” Goodman said.
