Kappa Sigma fraternity reinstated after shortened penalty

<p></p>

The USC chapter of Kappa Sigma fraternity has been reinstated after USC and the national fraternity came to an agreement that shortened the chapter's sentence for hazing and alcohol violations.

Kappa Sigma withdrew the USC chapter's charter in November, 2014, after investigations revealed 81 members were involved in hazing, alcohol violations and controlled-substance violations. The initial penalty was supposed to last until 2019, a total of five years. The chapter had just finished a three-year probation period following alcohol violations during recruitment when their charter was revoked in 2014.

The USC Kappa Sigma chapter will be under probation for one year. They will have limited use of their fraternity house in Greek Village for the remainder of the spring semester, and they will have full use beginning in the fall semester.

USC has not said why the sentence was shortened.
