Severe weather damages Williams-Brice

Severe weather that caused flooding throughout the Columbia area also damaged a new sign at Williams-Brice Stadium, The State reports. The sign was struck by lightning and the black cover of the block C was damaged by lightning and then ripped off by winds that gusted near 50 mph.

Carolina Water Service denied permit

Carolina Water Service isn't allowed to release waste water into the Saluda River anymore, WIS reports. The denial was handed down by DHEC, and the company will now have to shut down its I-20 waste water treatment plant in Lexington County. DHEC set a timetable for the closure of the plant that will result in fines for the company if it's not met.

South Carolina awarded more funds to fight Zika

South Carolina was awarded an additional $400 million in the fight against the Zika virus, The Post and Courier reports. The funds will be directed towards detecting, examining and treating the effects of the virus on infants born to women with the virus. This money comes in addition to funds granted earlier to combat the virus, which has shown up in 26 residents. 25 contracted the disease overseas and a 26th through intercourse with a partner who was positive for the virus.
