USC breaks grant money record

<p></p>

USC set a new record for research funding from July 2015 to June 2016. Various grants brought in more than $250 million, a 3 percent increase from the previous year.

The largest awards came from the Department of Health and Human Services and the National Institute for Health. Together, they gave nearly $100 million in research dollars for projects such as a new study on the effects of strokes on communication skills. Other studies funded by the grants ranged from improvements to school safety to renewable energy.

Vice President for Research Prakash Nagarkatti gave credit to the university's researchers for the record.

"I am so grateful for and proud of all of the hard work our faculty has contributed to make this success possible," she said in a statement. "Thanks to their hard work, and that of many support staff, graduate students, postdoctoral students and other who form the foundation from which they are able to reach great heights, we have another record-setting year."
