Jerry Brewer to transition out of associate VP role after decades of service

USC's Department of Student Life will see new leadership when former director of student services Anna Edwards begins her full duty as interim vice president for student life Monday.

Upon returning Monday, Edwards will succeed former associate vice president Jerry Brewer. While serving as associate vice president, Brewer oversaw a wide variety of USC student life services, including substance abuse and prevention, Greek life and the Russell House University Union.

Though Edwards will not fully take over until Monday, Brewer has already transitioned from his position as associate vice president for student life and development. He will continue working at USC with the Division of Student Affairs and Academic Support and the Department of Student Life.

Brewer studied political science as an undergrad and ended up receiving both of his degrees from USC. According to the Department of Student Life, he has spent 36 years in the field of higher education administration. His accomplishments include serving on several USC committees and development of Greek Village and the Strom Thurmond Fitness Center.

Edwards studied at Clemson University as an undergrad before receiving two postgraduate degrees, including a doctorate in educational administration, from USC. She joined Student Life as the assistant to the associate vice president for student affairs in 2005. In her role as director of student services, her duties included supervising operations for athletic student tickets and Greek life.

In his capacity as associate vice president for student life, Brewer oversaw USC Student Government. The current administration of Ross Lordo said Tuesday that they will remember Brewer fondly as he transitions into his new role.

"He has been a great mentor to everyone that has come through here," student body vice president Dani Goodreau said. "He's served for decades here and he's a breadth of knowledge, always been so supportive of student initiatives and really just [provided] great guidance for us when we're trying to move forward or what the best course of action is and really how to serve the students."

"You could tell that he's a very smart man," added student body treasurer Merritt Francis. "He's a very smart businessman, but he uses that for the advantage of the students, and it's pretty awesome."
