Researchers at USC's Arnold School of Public Health won a $2.3 million National Institutes of Health grant to study the health of South Carolina children.

The money will fund the Childcare Home Eating and Exercise Research Study, an in-depth examination of the diet and exercise habits of South Carolina children who attend family childcare homes. The NIH grant will be shared with Johns Hopkins University's Bloomberg School of Public Health.

USC's team, led by exercise science professor Russell Pate, will travel throughout the state to observe the children's behaviors and patterns.

The announcement comes on the heels of another grant award for the Arnold School from the Centers for Disease Control. That grant, which totaled $14.8 million, is for research on birth defects and disabilities.
