USC prepares to kick off 2018 Homecoming celebrations

Many students have taken a break from campus life over fall break, but the new week will bring many former students back to campus for 2018's calendar of Homecoming events beginning Oct. 22.

Events over the course of Homecoming include various competitions and traditions like Homecoming Kick-Off Carnival, Color Your Carolina banner painting, Cocky’s Canned Creations and Cockstock. The week's events all lead up to the Carolina vs. Tennessee football game on Saturday.

As students get ready to take part in this year’s Homecoming experience, many that are new to campus like Tori Vinson, a first-year nursing student, are excited to see what homecoming looks like at the collegiate level.

"My school, we did some events, but we didn’t really have this whole, excitement about it, so just seeing everybody get so excited,” Vinson said.

Students experiencing their first USC homecoming are not the only ones anticipating this year’s Homecoming week events. Julia Weiner, a second-year sport and entertainment management student, serves as the sponsorship chair of the Homecoming Executive Board after getting involved with the event during her first year. Her role includes getting large local businesses to support Homecoming week events.

“I’ve definitely met new people, made a lot of friends that I wouldn’t have made otherwise, and it’s given me a lot of experience 'cause I want to do stuff in marketing in my future,” Weiner said.

Ahead of the main events, students were able to collect mason jars, water bottles and stickers promoting this year's theme, "Sweet Home Carolina." Vinson said she appreciated the way the theme ties into the parts of USC's culture that drove her to attend the school.

“I think of the reason why I came to school here, actually, is the South. You know, I’m from the South and it’s just the South is my home,” Vinson said.
