PHOTOS: The S.C. NAACP protests death penalty
April 25, 2022The South Carolina State Conference of the NAACP held a rally on April 23, 2022, to oppose the death penalty. The rally was directly aimed at saving convicted citizens like Richard Moore from being put to death by the U.S. prison system. "Today, the NAACP and a coalition of like-minded organizations came together to talk about the injustices of the death penalty in our country," Kambrell Garvin of the S.C. House of Representatives said. One of the major points discussed during the protest were the racial disparities with this system of capital punishment. "282 people have been executed in SC since 1912, 208 out of that 282 were black folks," Garvin said, quoting a statistic from ejj.org and independent.co. Speakers emphasized the issues with the disparity and argued the death penalty is immoral and should be abolished in SC.
