Coming into the season, the hype surrounding freshman guard PJ Dozier was real. Before he had even set foot upon the hardwood of Colonial Life Arena, the question of whether fans should expect him to stay beyond this season was already being tossed around. The five-star was the first name to come up when the men’s basketball team was mentioned, and it was on his shoulders that this team was expected to win, both for this year and hopefully a few more as well. While the start of this season hasn’t been a year of stardom for Dozier, this team is far better with him on the court.

For the second consecutive game, sophomore forward A’ja Wilson led the South Carolina women’s basketball team with 26 points and eight blocks to guide the Gamecocks to victory over a ranked conference opponent. In a game with 19 lead changes, the Gamecocks never led by more than six points and left Colonial Life Arena with a 59-58 victory over No. 15/11 Texas A&M.

As the South Carolina men’s basketball team rattled off 15-straight wins to begin the season, media members and college basketball fans alike were convinced that the Gamecocks were undefeated simply for having not played a true tournament contender. Following Wednesday’s 73-50 road loss to Alabama, the non-believers have more reasons to write this team off as a pretender, rather than a contender. Don’t jump ship, at least not yet.

Fresh off a 92-76 win against Lipscomb on Friday, the South Carolina men’s basketball team hosted Western Carolina on Monday looking for an easy win. The Gamecocks were looking for good games from SEC Player of the Week Mindaugas Kacinas and freshman sensation P.J. Dozier to dispatch the Catamounts, but ended up relying on a host of players to complete the 76-53 victory.

The South Carolina women’s basketball team earned three wins over the weekend in the Waikiki Beach Marriott Rainbow Wahine Showdown to improve their record to 7-0. In addition to leaving the tournament with the trophy, sophomores A’ja Wilson and Bianca Cuevas were named to the All-Tournament Team, with Wilson earning MVP honors.

The women have quality wins over then-sixth-ranked Ohio State and 2015 WNIT champion UCLA. The men have taken down four mid-major opponents, putting them in the championship of the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam against Tulsa.
