Members of USC's 2017 Bateman Team were reunited this month to receive an award of excellence from the International Association of Business Communicators. Though they're now alumni, the award was a reminder of what the Bateman Team did to prepare them for their careers.

Hoover was immediately followed by her gaggle of Wedding Planning and Management class students, who were in the middle of pulling off USC’s 27th Love Story wedding.

The fifth annual Carolina Clash — a debate between representatives of College Democrats, College Libertarians and College Republicans — saw no yelling, storming out or audience outrage, in stark contrast to the 2016 event. One of the moderators, graduate student Alec Cobham, said the debaters seemed more concerned with finding common ground than actually winning the debate.

As a new student, having access to people that are familiar and welcoming can greatly ease the transition into the first semester. In my case, these people are veterans, and they are a valuable asset in my stress management. As finals approach and workloads increase, being able to take a break in the “Vet Lounge” and vent my frustrations with like-minded people is a priceless resource.

The first time Charles McDew met a white person in the South, a policeman pulled him over at 1 a.m. in Sumter, South Carolina. It was Thanksgiving break, 1959. In Ohio, where McDew had been raised, he wouldn’t have been worried. But this was segregated South Carolina. He ended up in jail with a broken jaw. The next day, the black section of the train was full heading to Orangeburg. So he sat down in the white section — back to jail. When he finally made it into the city, McDew figured he could cut through a park to get to the safe haven of the historically black South Carolina State University campus where he had started as a freshman. But the park wasn’t desegregated, so he was sent to jail for the third time in two days.

Unless, of course, that classroom is in the School of Journalism and Mass Communications and it’s their annual CreateAthon, a 24-hour blitz of pro-bono work for local nonprofits looking to improve their relationship with the local community.
