A USC student started a petition Monday urging the NCAA, SEC, ESPN and the university to change the kick-off time of the Nov. 28 matchup against in-state rival Clemson from 12 p.m. to a later time slot. Since the petition went online at approximately 5 p.m. Monday, it accumulated over 8,000 signatures in less than 24 hours.

I wish it weren't decided like this. I wish that a coach were judged solely on his team’s performance, not the tallies in the win-loss column. I wish that recruits made decisions based solely off the words of the coach speaking to them, with his name having no impact at all on their decision. I wish that a coach’s job security rested solely on the honest belief of his players in him, not the belief of the alumni, fans and non-football-related administrators who have no idea what happens behind locker room doors or on the practice field.

The once formidable South Carolina football team has declined dramatically in the past two seasons. Just two years ago, Gamecock fans were cheering against Missouri, knowing that a single misstep could lead South Carolina to the SEC Championship Game.

Slapping a finger against a helmet is the paper cut of the football world. Of all the dangers in this world, it’s embarrassing to slice open your hand on a piece of paper. Likewise, in a sport where bodies are flying around at top speed on every play, it seems improbable for an injury to occur as a result of the helmet, something designed to eliminate injuries. This happened when Ryan Fitzpatrick, quarterback for the New York Jets, had to leave the game this weekend due to a hand injury caused by a helmet.
