The average yearly salary for a social worker in Columbia is $51,606 as of Jan. 2. This falls below the median salary for South Carolina graduates with four-year degrees. The role of a social worker is one who helps others with a variety of problems such as abuse, poverty, mental health issues and learning and physical disabilities, to name a few. Many of us can guess the amount of emotional toll that a job like this would take on a person.

We hear about tragedies every day. News about the genocide in Myanmar or the ongoing war in Syria filters in, and recognition of these events also accompanies our sense of limited locality. Often, these tragedies feel a world away.

It seems that the media has been exploring the topic of mental illness recently. I’d like to start by saying that I am glad we are finally using major media platforms to discuss the issue of mental health in the United States. This is a growing issue, especially among young people, and the conversation surrounding it is long overdue.

Despite being used since ancient times across the globe, psychedelic drugs remain illegal and stigmatized in the United States. The DEA lists psychedelics as Schedule 1 drugs, meaning they are officially considered to have no more medicinal value than life-threatening substances like heroin. This flies in the face of the actual scientific evidence and medical literature, which has established that psychedelics such as LSD and psilocybin mushrooms have tremendous potential for treating crippling mental afflictions such as depression, anxiety and post traumatic stress disorder. Research into psychedelics was interrupted by the War on Drugs in 1970, but modern doctors have returned to the subject and found exciting medical possibilities that warrant further exploration.

A common motto for UN volunteers is “Global Goals, Local Leaders”, a theme that was apparent at the State House when the South Carolina UN Association came together to celebrate the ratification of the UN Charter. Students from USC, USC Upstate and Clemson University lined the sidewalks in booths with assigned UN sustainable development goals ranging from clean energy to equity in education.
