At the University of South Carolina, mental health and the emotional well-being of students is a top priority. USC devotes significant resources to providing the best possible care to students and has been recognized as a national leader among higher education institutions for these efforts.
USC's counseling services are moving their offices into the recently renovated Thomson Building. The move will take place Oct. 19, according to the university.
There is a common perception that those who use art as a way to maintain mental health are inherently creative people or that their work is a means by which to communicate unsettling things going on in their lives. We hold a certain stereotype of those who find emotional solace in artwork. There’s even a popularized term for it: “the tortured artist” — which all too easily ties the term “artist” to the horrific description of one who is “tortured.” Using art as an outlet for one’s mental illness can certainly be about hashing out feelings in a creative manner, but this is not always the case.
This week the university is putting on their stigma free mental health week. When I heard, I was initially quite excited. Mental healthcare on campus is bad, as our editorial board noted. This week is Stigma Free USC Week at USC — a week of events designed to raise awareness and reduce the stigma of mental illness. As this article is being written, the website doesn't work if you're using campus WiFi.
Markos Hurtt didn't realize anything was wrong when he first started worrying about paying for college. He just picked up a job. And then another. And then another.
In the past, women were forced into conforming to rigid beauty standards. From the suffragettes in the 1910s to the female body-positivity movement today, these standards have evolved into more health-focused directives. Unfortunately, the same cannot be said of masculine physical and emotional standards. In fact, men are now contained within a smaller box of socially acceptable behaviors and appearances than women.
When I first came to the university just three short years ago, I had a full week of Welcome Week, as the name would imply. It gave me time to move in, make friends, wander around campus and learn how to feed myself. I loved having a few days of fun and activities in order to adjust to being a college student. I walked to all my classes, I ate at different dining halls, and I got to learn how to be a college student, away from my family and home.
Recently, yet another Democrat (this time, California's Rep. Zoe Lofgren) has called for Donald Trump to undergo a mental health exam to test his fitness for the presidency. In fact, she introduced a bill calling for Pence and Trump's cabinet to "quickly secure the services of medical and psychiatric professionals" in order to determine if presidential removal procedures can be implemented.
Trustus Theater will launch a new season of productions in September, all tied by a common theme: “EYES OPEN.” The shows in Season 33 range in content from comedies to more serious, political-driven shows, but all will fall under the umbrella of this common theme. EYES OPEN will reflect the values of Trustus Theater, including diversity and social justice.
The newly completed Center for Health and Well-Being will greet students, faculty and staff returning to campus for the fall semester. The 68,000 square foot facility, which replaces the Thomson Student Health Center as the hub for medical care on campus, features new and expanded health services.

President Trump has, once again, managed to anger many Americans with a series of tweets this past Wednesday.
In South Carolina, there is no uniform way for schools to determine which students are afflicted with dyslexia.
Dear World asked USC a question: "If you had one story to share with the world, what would you say?" And USC responded en masse.
The buzzing of your phone seems unending as texts come in from friends planning a Horseshoe picnic or pool day lounge. It’s 75 degrees and sunny, the ideal day for relaxation… but you wouldn’t know it, because all you’ve been doing the entire day is staring at a textbook wondering how in the world you are supposed to pass that chemistry exam next week.
Some students were upset that classes were only canceled after 3:10 p.m. on Monday following the women's basketball team's NCAA tournament victory.
Students, faculty and community members came together Wednesday morning in the Russell House Ballroom to recognize everyday heroes at the eighth annual Stand Up Carolina Hero Awards banquet. Guests snacking on a complementary breakfast of parfaits and bagels listened to the stories of the honored students and faculty members who have made impacts on the lives of others.
