Every four years, millions of people across the globe gear up for the Summer Olympics in hopes that this year might bring gold to their team. This year, the Summer Olympics will be held in beautiful London, England and the opening ceremony is taking place Friday, July 27. People are always excited to see how their team performs and if a team brings home the gold to their country, they are seen as a national hero.

USC has saved $12.7 million for a 60,000-square-foot, $26.7 million expansion to the Thomson Student Health Center, Chief Financial Officer Ed Walton said at Friday’s board of trustees retreat.

The $26.7 million project is set to debut within three years, increasing the capabilities of on campus health assistance for the growing university population. Something commonly overlooked during periods of expansion is the surrounding infrastructure to support such growth. So after years of record freshman class sizes we’re glad to see the university planning to improve the health support systems for future students.

Usually when we think of the effects caffeine has on the body we think about jitters, shaky hands and hyperactive children. The normal physical effects that caffeine has on the body include increased heart rate, stimulated nervous system and inability to sleep. But could that Starbucks coffee you drink before work or that Red Bull you chug to power through the rest of your day be evidence for an insanity plea?

In 2006, the U.S. ranked first internationally for mental illness, and nearly half of all Americans met the requirements for mental illness at some point in their lives. Also, more than a fourth of adults suffer from a mental illness every year.

In the course of the ongoing debate over the federal government's support of abortion, Congress has come to a generally acceptable compromise: only offering funding for abortions in cases of incest, rape and danger to the mother's health. This compromise recognizes that there are reasons for ending a pregnancy that have less to do with personal whim and that morally-debased methods of impregnation should not be prolonged through an involuntary pregnancy and parenthood.

The recent Arizona shooting — as most things that make the news nowadays — has yet again thrown our country into a vicious cycle of debate, or more accurately, of blame and accusation. Everything from the rhetoric of political leaders to America's mental health system has been brought into the discourse as people seek a rational explanation for events that perhaps have none. But what we have failed to remember during this current crisis is that there are times for heated disagreement and the midst of national grief is not one of them.
