The present is looking pretty good for the Grand Old Party. They control both houses of Congress, the presidency, 32 state legislatures and 33 governorships. It's open season on regulations, states are allowed to withhold money from organizations that provide abortions and there's a spry young conservative on the Supreme Court. They've had some dust-ups, sure, like the humiliating failure of the Obamacare replacement bill and their attempt at gutting the ethics committee, but for the most part they're sitting pretty right now with nice margins of control of every branch of government.

On the Monday after Easter, the majority of the student body is back on campus and going to class. I’m not, however. Not because I don’t have class. Unfortunately, I have two Monday classes that I am missing. Classes that I can’t afford to take another unexcused absence from. However, when I asked if I could be excused due to travel after a religious holiday, I was told I could only be excused on the day of the actual holiday.

After six bloody years of civil war, Syria is a smoldering shell of a country. Of a pre-war population estimated at 22 million, 470,000 people — more than one person in every fifty — have been killed. Over half the populace have been forced to leave their homes because of the fighting. Five million Syrians have fled for neighboring countries, while 6.3 million are internally displaced within the country. It is a humanitarian crisis of heartbreaking proportions, and there’s no end in sight.

President Donald Trump struck political gold last week when he ordered missile strikes on a Syrian airbase in response to apparent gas attacks against Syrian civilians. After the attack, the president dusted off the old line that the missiles were launched in America’s defense, to thunderous applause on both sides of the aisle. This very obviously flies in the face of Trump’s previous statements, where he warned Obama against getting involved in Syria. Moreover, his actions have reignited the flame of American interventionism, which does more harm than good.

It seems every day there is a story about a bombing or a terrorist attack or a political conflict between leaders. The sad reality of the world is that there is a constant list of issues going on around us. The last thing we need to do is add needlessly to that list by trying to create our own issues out of nothing.

As you’ve probably noticed, all students at USC have a language requirement as part of the Carolina Core, ranging from just having to meet entry-level requirements to having to take two more classes past entry level.

The buzzing of your phone seems unending as texts come in from friends planning a Horseshoe picnic or pool day lounge. It’s 75 degrees and sunny, the ideal day for relaxation… but you wouldn’t know it, because all you’ve been doing the entire day is staring at a textbook wondering how in the world you are supposed to pass that chemistry exam next week.

Whenever I hear family debates about immigration, they tend to focus on national security and political issues. These debates are missing a key factor in the actual impact of immigration reform that is rarely mentioned. I am speaking, of course, about agriculture. Farmers rely on immigrants, and that includes illegal immigrants, as labor for harvesting crops. Seventy one percent of farm workers are immigrants and almost half are working in the United States illegally.

Politicians are infamous for making use of national tragedy. President George W. Bush had soaring approval ratings after 9/11 because he responded to the crisis by uniting the country and attempting to reassure everyone in a very turbulent and confusing time. In order to avoid soiling his moment as America’s father, he did not cast blame within or engage in partisanship. But in the age of President Donald Trump, one of the most divisive presidents in history, how can we expect our commander-in-chief to respond to his own 9/11?

A major part of President Trump’s campaign was his promises to provide a better alternative to an ailing Obamacare. Last week his first major legislative effort to make good on those promises was thwarted, not by opposition Democrats, but by a coalition of hard-line Republicans calling themselves the Freedom Caucus.

The Republican Party faced a test of its cohesion in the vote on Trump’s American Health Care Act, and it failed. After years of promising to repeal the Affordable Care Act, known colloquially as Obamacare, the deep divide between Trump and the conservative establishment halted what should have been an easy bill to pass. Now, Fox News’s Jeanine Pirro
is calling for Speaker of the House Paul Ryan to step down. Despite
my disagreements with Ryan, I do not think he should lose his position
over this collective debacle.

A Yankee transplanted from the shores of Buzzards Bay in Massachusetts, I remember driving with my dad down Gervais Street in a rented Chevy Impala the day before my orientation. I had never spent a night in Columbia.

The developing world is a topic many Americans think they have all figured out. Their minds flip to Africa, or perhaps South East Asia. They think of conflict, poverty and starving kids. What they don’t see are the opportunities for the United States that exist within the developing world, opportunities that are critical to our national interests and security. If the United States is to take advantage of these opportunities, voters need a clearer idea of what the developing world is and what we can stand to gain by working with it.

This weekend, Democrats and 56 percent of the American people won a huge victory with the withdrawal of the American Health Care Act, a bill which would ultimately have left 24 million people high and dry. Since then, everyone involved with the bill has been scrambling to blame everyone else involved. Who sunk the bill? Depending on who you ask, the answer might be Paul Ryan, Democrats, the Freedom Caucus or, if you ask Donald Trump, all of the above.

I was there when the expectations for this team were nothing. Before the season, I wrote a column I did not quite believe myself. “Martin’s Gamecocks will thrive despite departures,” it was titled. Wishful thinking? Maybe.

The large decline in smoking in the late 1900s is one of the most underappreciated public health victories in U.S. history. While formerly a near majority of American adults smoked, now barely one in five do. This is good because it literally saves lives of both smokers and those around them exposed to secondhand smoke. The latter is particularly insidious as even people who didn't make an unhealthy decision still have to pay the price for it.
