The Gamecocks struggled in 2015, posting a 6-12 record in SEC play and losing 11 of 15 contests outside of the Carolina Volleyball Center. After a season where six freshmen saw significant playing time, head coach Scott Swanson has an experienced group heading into the 2016 season.

Will Muschamp has vigorously worked to build hype around the Gamecocks for the upcoming season, despite 2015's 3-9 campaign. However, there is one weakness he hasn't been shy about pointing out: The secondary.

Last week, NBA stars LeBron James, Chris Paul, Dwyane Wade and Carmelo Anthony spoke at the ESPYs, addressing some of the recent tragedies across America and presenting fellow athletes with a call to action. As some of the more prominent figures in American sports, the players made it clear that athletes have a responsibility to use their platform to speak out on social issues.

One of the deepest positions on the depth chart for the South Carolina football team thinned out earlier in the spring when it was announced that 2015's leading tackler Skai Moore would miss the entire 2016 season with an injury. Despite Moore's absence, the Gamecocks have the talent at the linebacker position to still make it one of their strengths this fall. Let's take a look at the players who will be major contributors at linebacker this season.

Bringing in defensive guru Will Muschamp as the head guy in Columbia is expected to do wonders for South Carolina's defense as soon as 2016. While the Gamecocks don't have the raw talent that Coach Boom had at Florida, there are plenty of playmakers who can make a positive impact.

While the majority of the offensive focus is generally on the skill positions, battles in the trenches are the foundation for moving the ball down the field. Let's take a look at the potential starting five up front for South Carolina this season.

Offensive weapons were hard to come by for the South Carolina football team in 2015, and there is a cloud of uncertainty at the skill positions yet again this season. No receiver returns for 2016 with more than 12 receptions, while the leading returner in terms of rushing yardage is quarterback Lorenzo Nunez, who is not expected to be used under center much in 2016. There will be plenty of new faces in prominent roles in the Gamecock offense this fall, so let's get to know a little more about some of the players tasked with rejuvenating one of the SEC's worst offenses.

Will Muschamp and the Gamecocks missed out on a big transfer this week, as it was reported Thursday night that former Florida defensive back J.C. Jackson would not be enrolling at South Carolina. Jackson was a member of Muschamp's 2014 recruiting class in Gainesville, and he was strongly considering reuniting with his former coach, but he will not come to Columbia because of "a ruling that's beyond South Carolina's control."

Alabama football players Cam Robinson and Hootie Jones found themselves on the receiving end of good news Monday, when it was announced that neither player would face charges stemming from their May arrests. This decision makes sense because it wasn't a serious crime or anything ... Oh wait, Robinson and Jones were found in a car near a park, police discovered marijuana in that car and Robinson was looking at a felony count of possession of a stolen firearm.

The 2016 baseball season did not end the way South Carolina fans might have hoped as the team was bounced from the postseason in a two-game sweep at the hands of the Oklahoma State Cowboys. While the Gamecocks were playing at home in Founders Park, making the loss tougher to swallow, this team accomplished its most important goal: Bringing South Carolina back to the national landscape.

2015 was a down year for the South Carolina baseball team. The Gamecocks put together a 32-25 record and missed the NCAA Baseball Tournament for the first time since 1999. As the successor to the incredibly accomplished Ray Tanner, last year's campaign put head coach Chad Holbrook on the hot seat, and he fell out of favor with a number of fans.

Sophomore Tyler Johnson did the South Carolina baseball team and head coach Chad Holbrook a huge favor Sunday night, spinning a complete game to force a winner-take-all rematch with UNCW on Monday. However, the Gamecocks certainly aren't out of the woods yet.

For eight innings, Saturday's contest between the South Carolina Gamecocks and the Duke Blue Devils looked a lot like the Gamecocks' loss to Rhode Island the night before. However, clutch hitting gave the story a different ending — a happier one for South Carolina fans — as the Gamecocks won 4-2.

The South Carolina baseball team got off to a great start in Friday's regional opener against Rhode Island when they hit two home runs in the first inning and jumped out to a 4-0 lead by the end of the third. From then on, it was a sad night to be a Gamecock fan. The visitors tagged Clarke Schmidt for five runs in the fourth and fifth innings, and South Carolina never recovered, losing 5-4.

After a poor showing in Hoover at the SEC Baseball Tournament, the South Carolina baseball team was not selected as one of the eight national seeds for the NCAA tournament, despite winning the SEC East and finishing with a 20-9 record in conference play. However, the Gamecocks will play in Columbia for at least one more weekend. The team was selected as a regional host as the Gamecocks look to get back to Omaha for the first time since 2012.

The South Carolina baseball team will spend another weekend in Columbia, as the NCAA announced Sunday night that the Gamecocks are one of 16 regional hosts. Unfortunately for the team, South Carolina was not selected as one of the eight national seeds, meaning they are not guaranteed to host a super regional.

The world of sports tends to focus on wins, titles and records, as well it should, as athletes work tirelessly to perform at the highest level, searching to climb the figurative mountaintop that is a championship. However, there are times where the narratives our athletes write command a different sort of attention, such as when Jason Collins opened the door for homosexuality in professional sports. On Thursday in Waco, Texas, Baylor University called our attention to one of those occasions.
