In her column “iPad program comes to USC at high price,” Lauren Stefan argues that the new iPad Checkout Program has no educational value and is a waste of money. I couldn’t disagree more. The interactivity and portability of iPads make them as education-friendly as any product can get. The library’s iPads come with academically related apps: Dictionary.com, Google Search and Wikipanion, to name a few.

The following are student response to "Students lose vital skills in home school."
USC President Harris Pastides went before South Carolina’s House Ways and Means Committee Wednesday with a request that has become familiar to many of us — more state funding. What made this time different was the nature of his request, as he chose to focus on several key projects sure to earn a lot of attention in the months to come. A difference this year’s request, though, has to be a certain ace up Pastides’ sleeve — the study showing the $4.1 billion that USC alumuni have contributed to the state’s economy in recent years.

In the past several years, students have been repeatedly asked to enter their cellphone numbers on VIP to receive text messages from the Carolina Alert Notification System.
In response to Janice Aria’s letter, I am greatly disturbed by her defense of the circus’s treatment of its animals.

Parking — it's an evil older than time here at USC. Ask any student on campus how they feel about parking, and be prepared for a long rant filled with references to cramped lots, unpaid tickets and missed classes. No single part of life at USC seems to have caused more frustration and more time wasted than the current parking system.
I've heard several pastors concede that up to 80 percent of current American church members probably aren't Christians. This is immediately what my mind turns to when I read statements like "I hope there's lots of banners in hell when your rotting in there you atheist f--- #TeamJesus," as if that is the statement expected to pour out from a Jesus-centered heart of "gentleness and respect" (1 Peter 3:15).

What did surprise us about this choice, though, is that our state picked a candidate that simply can't see the rest of the campaign through to its conclusion — let alone stand against President Barack Obama in the general election. South Carolina prides itself on picking presidents, but that pride is going to fall flat on its face when Mitt Romney takes the candidacy right out of Gingrich's hands.
It's upsetting and very disheartening to read editorials that go against everything my team and I have worked on for so many years. Tasked with promoting the entire Columbia region, as well as being the central hub for conference, event, restaurant and entertainment information for visitors and locals alike, we strive on a daily basis to do as much as we can to connect individuals with the happenings taking place throughout their city. Some of the events may focus on families, while other focus on business-oriented conferences, but nevertheless, it's valuable information about various events taking place right here in Columbia. Just last year alone, Columbia played host to hundreds of events, festivals, meetings and conferences including the World Beer Festival, The Nature Conservancy, South Carolina Chamber of Commerce, WNOK's BridalShow, South Carolina Diabetes Advisory Council, Winston's Wish Foundation, Miss South Carolina Scholarship Organization, The Palmetto Freedom Forum (with many presidential candidates), AME Church National Conference (with President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf of Liberia), Social Crush and many more. This list barely skims the surface of the diverse events that have taken place here in Columbia over the last year. Many of these events sought out proactive University of South Carolina students to intern or volunteer and allowed them the opportunity to gain beneficial experience for their future career choices.
At Ringling Bros. and Barnum and Bailey Circus, we take great pride in our animals — their well-being, care and ongoing needs. Our animal care programs rival the best in the world, and we have the largest sustainable herd of Asian elephants in the Western Hemisphere. Millions of people come to our shows each year and see that our animals are thriving in our care. Everyone with Ringling Bros. has a fundamentally different viewpoint than PETA and other animal rights extremist groups about animals in captivity. Our elephants serve as ambassadors for their species in the wild, where they are highly endangered.

Gov. Nikki Haley spent most of her State of the State speech Wednesday night addressing the economy, but she glossed over one of the biggest issues facing South Carolina today.
