Starting this semester, Student Government is pioneering a speakers series that will bring a crowd of big names to Carolina. Student Body President Joe Wright has spearheaded the initiative, which aims to win visits from every candidate in the upcoming primary and general elections. That list doesn't even count talks expected from Gov. Nikki Haley, former Gov. Mark Sanford, State Treasurer Curtis Loftis and The New York Times reporter Jeremy Peters.

A new semester, a new year — spring at USC brings with it exciting opportunities for incoming and returning students alike. The big news in 2012 will be the South Carolina Republican primary, with only a couple of weeks separating the start of classes from the vote. The national coverage will fall heavily on our state, and Columbia in particular, as candidates we have only seen on TV or briefly in person campaign their way through our backyards.
I am a member of the SC-Alpha chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon writing this letter in response to the recent online article “USC’s Sigma Phi Epsilon chapter closed by national association” by Cassie Cope and Thad Moore.

The battle on the gridiron just can't compare with the one raging both in and out of the stadium. The lack of tickets, the shortage of wristbands and the continued presence of nonstudents in the student section has contributed to a flood of student comments that have made one thing very clear: This has to stop.
I also respected their efforts and trusted that their single source of motivation was their desire to improve the University of South Carolina.
