Mayor Benjamin, in committing to making the city a safer place to live and visit, will increase the number of police officers in Five Points and surrounding areas. We can only hope that these officers will be as serious about catching violent criminals as they are about ticketing underage drinkers. If they are, we will have one of the safest cities in the country for sure.

When Martin Luther King Jr. advocated freedom, equality and a spirit of brotherhood in America more than 50 years ago, he anticipated opposition. In fact, it took decades for his ideals to be put into effect, and many still argue that King’s dream still is not completely realized.

The recent Arizona shooting — as most things that make the news nowadays — has yet again thrown our country into a vicious cycle of debate, or more accurately, of blame and accusation. Everything from the rhetoric of political leaders to America's mental health system has been brought into the discourse as people seek a rational explanation for events that perhaps have none. But what we have failed to remember during this current crisis is that there are times for heated disagreement and the midst of national grief is not one of them.

On display at Carolina Productions’ “town hall” meeting Monday night was an array of voodoo numbers. By citing that 13,000 individuals attended CP events during the 2009-2010 school year, the executive board tried to make the case that more students attended their events than football games.
Since CP apparently can’t understand large numbers, here’s a small one: nine. That was how many people attended its meeting, which was supposed to provide a forum for students to give it feedback in the wake of the Jenny Sanford controversy. Three of those attendees were Daily Gamecock staff members, and one was Associate Vice President for Student Affairs Jerry Brewer.

We did it. For the first time in 40 years, the Carolina Gamecocks beat the Clemson Tigers two years in a row. This is obviously a very big deal, and since it is not too far past Thanksgiving, it is only appropriate for all Carolina fans to be grateful and give thanks for the incredible season our football team has had this year.

This Thanksgiving Break, many USC students will be boarding planes to head back home. Whether they are traveling to Chicago or Cincinnati, San Diego or San Antonio, they will all have one thing in common: They will be violated. The Transportation Security Administration recently ordered that all fliers must either be patted down, like applying a rub to a turkey, or go trough a full-body scanner that sees through their clothing, like watching that turkey bake in the oven when you’re not supposed to peek at Thanksgiving dinner.
