In June of this year, the Supreme Court decided that the fourth section of the Voting Rights Act (VRA) was unconstitutional and should not be enforced as law. This five-four ruling nullified what has been law since 1965: the preclearance section to the VRA, which necessitated each state receiving preclearance from the federal government before any voting restrictions be made law.

The Bill of Rights undoubtedly came first because of each of its protections’ utmost importance in our country’s laws. Due to its broad applicability and the abuse by citizens for their situational gains, the amendments have all taken on a dynamic nature. The Bill of Rights was created to give all individuals the same rights against the government to prevent an imbalance of federal power.

The increased violence in Columbia lately has everyone feeling uneasy. Several recent incidents involving guns near the Horseshoe have raised the question of what police are doing to curb violence. This weekend, Five Points was the site of a large brawl with eight to 10 shots fired, causing people to further doubt the “increased” police presence.
