As a New Yorker, I’m usually proud of my state. Normally known for setting trends in style, technology and lawmaking, the verdict of a recent case ended with a shockingly out-of-date conviction. Michael Pena, a New York police officer of three years, was accused of raping Lydia Cuomo and was found guilty of predatory sexual assault along with oral and anal sodomy.

Marijuana has always been antonymous to progress. Often linked with lethargy, inattentiveness and mellowed minds, it doesn’t boast productivity in most cases. However, marijuana laws are starting to undergo real changes, which should alter the way it’s seen in years to come.

The prevalence of technology is obvious in all of our lives, but what’s been eating me is how our dependence on technology to remember anything that we deem memorable is beginning to affect our brains.

I enjoyed my holiday time with family, being away from schoolwork and, of course, the things I received for Christmas. But as early as the night of Christmas, there were commercials on TV addressing problems with phrases like “Didn’t get what was on your list for Christmas? Treat yourself to this new electronic! Or new clothes, or new jewelry!”

One of the larger points of contempt among political debaters this decade is America’s role as the world’s police force. This issue was only slightly subdued during the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks because occupation made sense for national defense. However, in the recent years of waning fights in the Middle East, the issue resurrects itself in the mouths of those questioning our country’s arrogance.

As America’s youth, we’re both young and impressionable. It’s only logical that we have age restrictions on cigarettes and alcohol and companies like Dove to remind us that we’re beautiful. This year is the first year I’m eligible to vote for the president of the United States, and I didn’t register. While I’m sure some people think that’s plain un-American and highly predictable from my generation, I just couldn’t muster enough interest in either candidate to hope he lead our country.

WikiLeaks seems to terrify governments everywhere. When WikiLeaks brought ACTA to the world’s attention, ACTA officials turned to abolish WikiLeaks as their platform when lobbying for support in Mexico. A more recent leak may be the perfect example of why the U.S. signed off on ACTA, which attempts to stifle hidden information from leaking to the public view by shutting down sites like WikiLeaks. In 2010 U.S. Army private Bradley Manning leaked hundreds of thousands of U.S. Army documents, most pertaining to operations in Iraq, and tens of thousands pertaining to operations in Afghanistan, including video footage that depicts U.S. troops killing a journalist in Iraq, a video which the U.S. government had tried to conceal.

When you went to Google Wednesday, you may have done a double take at the design. It was a black censorship strip covering the usually colorful Google logo. Known for their creative designs that give credit to famous people, places or events, Google’s latest one may turn out to be just as famous.
