The second Unite the Right rally, which took place in Washington, D.C. this August, was a dismal failure for far-right organizations across the country. The tiny group of two dozen marchers was vastly outnumbered by counter-protesters, to the point that some counter-protesters never even saw any white nationalists.

“Impeachment” seems to be the word of the hour, even if it only means the indictment of charges against the president and not necessarily his removal from office. Trump’s entire presidency, including the Russian interference with our elections, his incessant need to alienate our allies and his love of foreign dictators comes across like a fictional television show or dystopian novel.

The Trump administration’s handling of this month’s immigration scandal involving detaining children and separating them from their parents was nothing short of abysmal. Never mind that the executive order ending the practice spelled the word “separation” wrong, the president also changed his position on the topic fourteen times before signing the executive order that he originally denied was possible.

Look out, South Carolina! A new candidate for governor will change the face of our state. This person is a maverick, never afraid to stand up to the establishment in Columbia and is in touch with the working class, despite being a very white and affluent native. If you vote for this suit-clad individual, they will reduce the size of government, along with your taxes, and promise to kowtow to the Trump administration you most likely voted for in 2016!

This year’s G7 summit is over and did not go well for the President. The meeting of leaders of world powers has been marked by Trump’s roundly-denounced recommendation that Russia be allowed to attend the summit, as well as French President Emanuel Macron’s suggestion that the nations convene a G6 summit without the United States.

For the victims of the American public school system, summer vacation is near. In South Carolina, most schools end their academic year in early June, usually capping the year off with a pointless exercise in standardized testing. But considering the recent teacher strikes and how American school children are falling behind their international counterparts, should we reconsider the annual tradition of summer vacation and go to a year-round school schedule?

2016 was a watershed year in politics and it generated a long list of winners and losers for the conservative side. Thanks to the rise of Donald Trump, many conservative politicians have found themselves between a rock and a hard place in trying to appease the new administration while also sticking to their Republican roots.

Guns seem to be such a hot-button topic these days. After the Parkland shooting and the subsequent backlash against the NRA, state legislatures are practically falling over themselves to pass legislation to keep their constituents happy. South Carolina, always the forward-thinking state that it is, did things a little differently with a new amendment to current legislation that would allow anyone with a concealed carry permit to carry a weapon on any college campus in the state.

This column is a response to a column that ran in the April 5, 2018, edition of the Daily Gamecock, entitled "Studying abroad not worth it."

Americans have lost faith in the evening news. Fewer than 20 percent of Americans trust national news and only slightly more trust local news. Because of the culture of “fake news” and conspiratorial thinking, media outlets are attempting to combat the dishonest practices and elevate themselves above the controversy.

Bicycles are the most elegant simple machines available for transportation today. Yet the rate of serious injury or death for cyclists is nearly 40 times that of motorists, with the main cause of accidents being motorist negligence. As a cyclist myself, I think it is time we rise up and seize the means of transportation.

Freedom of speech is a universal principle in that if someone condones the right for anyone to speak his or her mind, they must accept it when someone they disagree with does the same. As the saying commonly misattributed to Voltaire goes, “I disagree with what you say, but I will defend to the death your right to say it.” Even though this same philosophy is emphasized in the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution, freedom of speech has come under scrutiny by those who argue that hate speech is worse than hate crimes and, therefore, should be limited.

Bike share programs have become a part of the modern urban community. Both Greenville and Charleston maintain a bike share program that allows anyone to affordably rent a bike for a short period of time for fitness and transportation. Columbia has tried to get a bike share program since 2015, and now it seems that the goal will become reality by September.

Despite what the groundhog predicted last month, it seems that spring has come early. In a rise in temperatures that certainly has nothing to do with climate change, the past few weeks of February have felt more like May, allowing everyone to spend more time outdoors. However, the 70-degree days also bring an old enemy: sticky, yellow pollen discharged from the blooms of the dread Bradford pear tree.

When freshmen first step on campus for orientation, we are taught that the Carolina Creed is like the Force. It surrounds us, binds us and holds our campus together. Nothing emphasized this point more than when President Pastides and Student Body President Lordo made a stand against the racist posters put up on the first day of class, citing the Carolina Creed’s promise to fight discrimination to rousing applause.

It’s been a rough year for the presidential cabinet. After a slew of firings and resignations, the turnover rate of Trump’s White House is starting to look like that of your average McDonald’s. However, one member of this band of failed cabinet members has risen above the controversy and successfully re-entered public life without completely ruining her career. Her name is Omarosa Manigault.

One of greatest features of the University of South Carolina is its large variety of student organizations, which range from Greek social fraternities and sororities to academic unions. A sports club is a specific type of student organization that is built around a specific sport while also receiving funding from the university.

40 percent of Americans use dating apps, and 20 percent of current, lasting relationships started with an online encounter. In the college dating scene, dating apps are of ever-increasing importance, and in the world of Tinder clones some apps struggle to stand out among the rest.

Just in time for the most romantic month of the year, rumors have surfaced alleging that former South Carolina governor Nikki Haley is currently having an affair with Donald Trump. The main perpetrator behind the rumor is "Fire and Fury" author Michael Wolff, whose recent interview circuit has led him to hint at a current affair with a woman specifically mentioned in the book.

Over the past few weeks, since the riots in Charlottesville about the removal of a Confederate monument, the issue over whether or not Confederate monuments should be removed has again reared its ugly head.
