Cocky tried his hardest, but he just could not match the skill of the other competitors. With a determined look on his face, rarely seen outside of Williams-Brice Stadium, he smeared alternating stripes of red and white icing onto his giant cupcake. His attempt was admirable, but he was clearly beaten by the other 10 competitors. The third annual Sweet Showdown Valentine Cupcake Competition, held in Gibbes Court Bistro yesterday, was hosted by Carolina Dining Services and made possible by General Mills. The competition gave the students 10 minutes to decorate a cupcake with icing and sprinkles. “There has been a good turnout these past three years, and participation has been increasing,” said Alexis Mood, student promotions coordinator for Carolina Dining Services. “This competition is a good way for students to get involved in a hands-on way with Carolina Dining, who they can interact with and get to know personally.” Among the competitors was Student Body President Kenny Tracy, who humbly expressed embarrassment at his edible artwork. “In retrospect, I should have drawn something last night,” Tracy said. Judging the competition will be in the hands of students, who can vote online on Carolina Dining Service’s Facebook page. The winner will be announced on Monday and will receive a $100 prize. “I am definitely planning on voting for my favorite, because it was clear everyone was working really hard to do a good job. “It’ll be tough choosing my favorite, though,” said Nikita Morse, a first-year biochemistry and molecular biology student who came to witness the sugary battle. Morse and other attendees were also able to decorate their own personal cupcakes after the competition. Explaining her design, Morse said, “I had to rep my sorority letters, [Alpha Gamma Delta]. It’s Valentine’s Day, after all.” Also in attendance was student body vice presidential candidate Will Fortanbary, who expressed excitement at the opportunity to help out with the event. “I love the opportunity to work with Carolina Dining. It’s one of the great things I love about being a part of the Sodexo team,” Fortanbary said. Competitor Allyson Schaefers expressed similar sentiments about the event. “I love cupcakes; it’s pretty simple,” Schaefers said.
