In late July, three black South African defendants smiled in court while admitting they drowned 12 year-old Amaro Viana in scalding water, raped the boy’s mother, Geraldine, murdered Geraldine and Amaro’s father, Tony, execution style, and then killed the family dog. Unfortunately, cases such as this are not uncommon in South Africa. A simple “Google” search reveals countless horrifying stories and photographs of mutilation of white landowners and farmers by black perpetrators in South Africa.

Footage surfaced last week of President Barack Obama relaying his belief in redistribution of wealth. Before his election to the presidency, he openly discussed his interest in "spreading the wealth around." Nonetheless, those who identify such remarks as being "socialist" in ideology are labeled as racist, hateful, conspiracy theorists, etc. Before accusing the president of attempting to institutionalize socialist policies, one should analyze the shift in the American economy in comparison to the words of Karl Marx himself.

In the wake of violent uprisings in numerous Islamic countries around the globe, American national security is rightly a focal point of the media's concern. But after rioting and protests subside and the world settles down, where should foreign policy attention focus? The answer is sub-Saharan Africa, one of the most underdeveloped regions. This is not because it is a national security threat, but because China may be systematically colonizing those resource-rich countries.

The death of conservatism in the United States is impending. While the news media and popular entertainment have pushed nontraditional values for over fifty years, and the majority of public schools advocate a progressive agenda, these are not the only factors influencing the current political makeup. Of monumental importance, are the ethno-cultural transitions taking place in the United States. In May, CNN reported that for the first time in American history minority births have overtaken white births by a margin of 50.4 percent to 49.6 percent. Under current trends, by the late 2030s or early 2040s Caucasians may be a minority in the US.

Regular, unleaded gas in Columbia is up to $3.80 per gallon. In other parts of America, the price is well over $4. Unfortunately for consumers, the U.S. is not in a thriving economy, which only makes the price at the pump another difficulty for struggling families.

A cultural shift in the United States is evident. Examples of this fluctuation abound, from the acceptance of nudity in television programming to the change in perceptions of abortion to opinions of what defines marriage. This shift is not limited to social issues, however, as it extends into the economic spectrum as well. In December 2011, the Huffington Post published an article referencing a Pew Research Center poll that showed that 49 percent of Americans between the ages of 18 and 29 held a favorable view of socialism, while only 46 percent had positive feelings toward capitalism. While some may argue that left-leaning social engineering will benefit America in the years ahead, what about leftist economic policies?

Carl Brzorad's column, "North Carolina voters show ignorance at polls" in Wednesday's Daily Gamecock was disappointing to read. The timing of the topic is odd (the North Carolina vote occurred a few months ago) especially as there is not a shortage of current events of monumental importance which could be discussed.
