Ellie Boan was on the phone with her mother when she heard her dog start barking at helicopters flying over her house, helicopters on their way to the high school five minutes from her house. There was an active shooter at that high school. She opened her laptop to the news and watched as teenagers from her hometown of Parkland, Florida, emerged from their high school covered in blood.

Gov. Henry McMaster managed to connect an anecdote about his bulldog to Samsung's expansion in South Carolina, all in response to a question about improving higher education. He met casually with a group of about 50 students, mainly members of the College Republicans, in Russell House Tuesday night to talk about his career and answer questions on major state and local issues.

Just this weekend, USC’s Dance Marathon celebrated its 20th anniversary by raising over one million dollars for the Child Life program at Palmetto Health Children’s Hospital. The first president of Dance Marathon, Simon Herrmann, returned to Dance Marathon for the first time since his graduation in 1999 and witnessed this milestone for the organization.

A long-anticipated increase in undergraduate fees for USC’s College of Engineering and Computing is gaining traction. Pending the Board of Trustees approval, the phased-in fee increase per semester will take place in the fiscal year of 2019.

The 2018 race for president of the student body has seen four candidates, three of whom are running on tickets. Third-year finance and risk management student Tommy DiBona, third-year English student West Russell, third-year broadcast journalism and political science student Kathryn Stoudemire, and third-year public health student Taylor Wright are competing to earn votes on Tuesday and Wednesday to become the next student body president.

The Student Government Constitutional Council has denied an appeal from presidential candidate Tommy DiBona and vice presidential candidate Madi Carzon, who disagreed with a Monday night Elections Commission ruling that gave both of them five points.
