The glory days of SEC college football were beautiful for fans of the conference's 12 (and eventually 14) schools, because the conference was undoubtedly superior to all other leagues in the nation. However, those days are no more. The SEC is no longer the best conference in college football.

We've heard this before. Last summer, Tennessee was a trendy SEC Championship pick and plenty of sportswriters considered them a threat to make the College Football Playoff. For those who have forgotten what happened last fall, let me remind you.

Will Muschamp reeled in another prized recruit Friday, as the Gamecocks picked up a commitment from four-star defensive end M.J. Webb. Webb took to Twitter to announce the news, posting pictures with some coaches, including Muschamp, who had been recruiting the Georgia native while coaching at Auburn in 2015.

The addition of safety Hamsah Nasirildeen has helped change the complexion of South Carolina's 2017 recruiting class. Coach Will Muschamp had steadily been building a deep and versatile class, but Nasirldeen's commitment Tuesday gave the group a signature prospect to complement its breadth of talent.

When the South Carolina football team opened fall practice, all the focus was on the quarterback battle involving Perry Orth and Brandon McIlwain. However, in the first two weeks of camp, the running back position has taken center stage, as junior David Williams has lost whatever edge he had on redshirt freshman AJ Turner.

One of the deepest positions on the depth chart for the South Carolina football team thinned out earlier in the spring when it was announced that 2015's leading tackler Skai Moore would miss the entire 2016 season with an injury. Despite Moore's absence, the Gamecocks have the talent at the linebacker position to still make it one of their strengths this fall. Let's take a look at the players who will be major contributors at linebacker this season.

Bringing in defensive guru Will Muschamp as the head guy in Columbia is expected to do wonders for South Carolina's defense as soon as 2016. While the Gamecocks don't have the raw talent that Coach Boom had at Florida, there are plenty of playmakers who can make a positive impact.

While the majority of the offensive focus is generally on the skill positions, battles in the trenches are the foundation for moving the ball down the field. Let's take a look at the potential starting five up front for South Carolina this season.

Offensive weapons were hard to come by for the South Carolina football team in 2015, and there is a cloud of uncertainty at the skill positions yet again this season. No receiver returns for 2016 with more than 12 receptions, while the leading returner in terms of rushing yardage is quarterback Lorenzo Nunez, who is not expected to be used under center much in 2016. There will be plenty of new faces in prominent roles in the Gamecock offense this fall, so let's get to know a little more about some of the players tasked with rejuvenating one of the SEC's worst offenses.

Will Muschamp and the Gamecocks missed out on a big transfer this week, as it was reported Thursday night that former Florida defensive back J.C. Jackson would not be enrolling at South Carolina. Jackson was a member of Muschamp's 2014 recruiting class in Gainesville, and he was strongly considering reuniting with his former coach, but he will not come to Columbia because of "a ruling that's beyond South Carolina's control."

Alabama football players Cam Robinson and Hootie Jones found themselves on the receiving end of good news Monday, when it was announced that neither player would face charges stemming from their May arrests. This decision makes sense because it wasn't a serious crime or anything ... Oh wait, Robinson and Jones were found in a car near a park, police discovered marijuana in that car and Robinson was looking at a felony count of possession of a stolen firearm.

This past April saw three former Gamecock football players get selected in the 2016 NFL Draft. The first Gamecock off the board was wide receiver Pharoh Cooper. He was drafted by the recently relocated Los Angeles Rams with the 19th pick of the fourth round. Later, the New York Jets selected offensive tackle Brandon Shell with the 19th pick of the fifth round. Finally, the New York Giants selected tight end Jerell Adams with the ninth pick of the sixth round.
