Michael Zajac answered the call.
Zajac, a senior thrower, once again dominated at Virginia Tech, winning the shot put competition.
"Zajac threw 67 feet in the weight throw, which is a good one for him this early in the season," Frye said in a release. "That's close to his personal best, and he won again. That was a big one for us on the guys' side."
Another Gamecock who put in a second consecutive impressive showing was senior sprinter Lakya Brookins on the women's side. Brookins ran another NCAA automatic qualifying time (7.24) in the 60m event to finish second behind Clemson sophomore Stormy Kendrick's time of 7.22. Brookins shaved .01 off her time the first time out at VT.
Shayla Mahan also fared well on the day, placing second overall in the 200m dash with a time of 23.81, which bested her time of 23.83 last week.
Following in suit with their senior counterparts, several Gamecock freshmen excelled at the meet. Sanura Eley-O'Reily and Vashti Bandy placed in the top 10 in the 300m, finishing fifth and seventh respectively. Bandy and Eley-O'Reily also participated in the women's 4x400m relay, placing second with a time of 3:41.66 along with teammates Nadonnia Rodrigues and Janica Austin. Freshman Clayton Gravesande placed fifth in the men's 300m dash with a time of 34.09.
Eley-O'Reily and Gravesande both got victories in the individual 400m dash to round out the great weekend for the two freshmen. Eley-O'Reily ran a time of 54.99 to win for the women's side and Gravesande won on the men's side of things with a time of 48.11, narrowly beating out teammate and All-American Andre Carter's time of 48.16. Carter finished third in the event. Aaron Anderson placed seventh in the event, posting a time of 48.36.
"We had a pretty good day," Frye said. "Kya got second and Shayla made the finals in the 60-meter. The girls we had also ran good 300s with three [personal records], and Sanura and Vashti finished in the top eight. So those were the good things with the girls."
