Gamecocks take the field for Garnet and Black Spring Game

Football closes out spring season Saturday

46,412 fans turned out to Williams-Brice Stadium on a picturesque Saturday afternoon to catch the South Carolina football team’s annual Garnet and Black Spring game.

With the team’s divided by quarterback – with Dylan Thompson and Perry Orth leading the Black team and Brendan Nosovitch and Connor Mitch representing the Garnet team – Black emerged as 28-10 winners.

Starters saw limited action in order to prevent injury, but No. 1 quarterback Dylan Thompson did receive considerable reps. The redshirt junior completed eight of his 11 passes for 129 yards and a touchdown.

On the receiving end of Thompson’s toss into the endzone was none other than head women’s basketball coach Dawn Staley, who served as this year’s “celebrity off the sidelines”.

Starting running back Mike Davis took just two hand offs on the day, gaining 13 yards in his scarce playing time.

Redshirt freshman David Williams turned in one of the most productive days of any Gamecock, rushing for 35 yards on seven carries and finding the endzone twice.

The Garnet and Black game wraps up the spring practice season for South Carolina, and the team will return to the field again in August when it begins preparation for Texas A&M in the 2014 season opener.
