Fans flock to support men's soccer

4,505 turn out for Gamecocks’ exhibition match

South Carolina men’s soccer team suffered a 1-0 defeat to the Phoenix in Tuesday’s exhibition game against Elon,. But it was the scene off the field, and more specifically wrapped around it, that made the most headlines on the day.

A massive 4,505-person crowd turned out to see the Gamecocks in their final home tune-up before the start of the regular season, with the bleachers filled to capacity and a standing-room only crowd lining the fences around Stone Stadium.

“I have never seen a crowd like that for a preseason match. It’s unbelievable,” head coach Mark Berson said. “Hats off to everybody, and we appreciate — especially the ones back behind the goal — they gave us a lot of support back there. It’s a great, great group. Really exciting.”
